Does your M start without pushing in the clutch?

Hi guys, trying to diagnose an issue i am having.

Can your Euro Z4mc or roady start without depressing the clutch pedal? obviously in neutral. or do you have to have the foot on the clutch pressed in? :tumbleweed:

On mine, if its in neutral, i can start the car standing next to it, (easy for warming it up so i don't even have to jump in it to start it) but my indy thinks that might be the issue i am having with the starter not working sometimes (clutch switch bad) :headbang:

I have cruize control if that makes an difference??

cheers and thx :D

If the cars not in neutral then how can you start it without the clutch pushed in.!?!?

Anyway I've been having the same problem on my M. Fitted a new starter motor and ignition switch last week and the car has been fine since. Both are quite easy to do yourself

well i am asking if the starter engages, obviously.. LOL man.. did you really just say that? :D :!: Obviously not looking to start the car without the clutch pedal pushed in, in gear… :!:

I am asking if in neutral gear you can start the car without depressing the clutch pedal...

Can't see the clutch switch making any difference as it can be started with foot on or off the clutch.

If it's the starter not working sometimes then as above I would go for the ignition switch or starter.

I had to change my ignition switch, slightly different issue as my ignition lights would not come on sometimes which resulted in the car just turning over and over but failing to start. Cost me just over a tenner for a used one so an easy cheap possible fix before changing the starter.

Thanks guys, thats made things clearer.. :) so what duty does the clutch switch have? just no start if in gear?

Mine will try to start whether it's in gear or not, whether clutch is depressed or not.

When you say 'i can start the car standing next to it', do you have remote start installed? If so, it might be a safety feature the of the device ensuring that the car doesn't shoot off when it's started.

ok, so what does the clutch pedal switch do then? if you can start the car, in gear or in neutral with or without the clutch pedal pressed in?

no , no remote start, i just reach in through the window and turn the key. don't think remote start was even an option..

The clutch switch has a couple of functions one of which is to turn the cruise control off when you dip the clutch, it also tells the ecu when the clutch is down so it can adjust mixtures accordingly.
On your car it has no relation to the starter motor operation at all, unlike a lot of cars these days that have it as a safety feature to stop you starting when in gear and jumping forward.

Hope this helps

I have cruise control and can confirm mine starts without clutch pedal depressed.

Err, not sure, I think I depress the clutch automatically.

Reading this, I realised I can't actually recall starting it without pressing the clutch either. Of course it will start without it pressed though.

Thanks guys, that will just about do it. Thanks for chiming in.

Thx Stuartt, think you were the first to give the full rundown.

cheers
