hell yeh they rip you off. I took mine BMW in for an inspection 2 service (full car check including suspension) knowing it had a broken spring. got the car back and they hadn't even noticed an obvious / common thing like a broken spring. needless to say they re-did the service at a drastically reduced price and tail between their legs. 2nd and last time I pay a stealer to service my cars. I always service and document anything i do to my cars myself and they always sell really easily and people who have come to look at my cars have actually prefered to read about what's actually been done rather than just a stamp that tells them nothing.

I just bought my own oil to take in - saves half the price as well.

Dealers use Castrol SLX, but I will bring Castrol Edge when next oil service is due.

Makes me feel better about my last oil service, which included brake fluid change but not coolant fluid apparently. £361.12
But that also included rear brake pads, loan car insurance, door handle trim (charged me for fitting though when I had already removed the old one and could fit a new one in two seconds :x ) They also replaced the rear springs but that was "free"

I have the Inspection 2 coming up at the end of next month, just in time for the MOT too. It's looking like 17k miles between services, got to love motorway miles  I don't know if I should go for a BMW Specialist or one last visit to the dealership (any services after this will most likely be a specialist) The dealership stamps are handy for "goodwill gestures" but the milage on my Z4 is getting beyond the point it matters. I have just taken out a warranty with Warranty Direct with all the work to be done by BMW if anything goes wrong, I wonder if not having it serviced there will effect things :|
The dealership is easy for me whilst working, no idea if a specialist would even have a courtesy car available.

cheers.herminator good reading mate,,yeh i now relise i was ript off,thanks
to the members, but it will never happen again.if you have the cash go dealership
if not,get a local garage,its been 6 years since i was in darlington,nice place,

thanks.

I'm a bit puzzled !!!! understood the coolant is longlife and does not require changing, an oil service at main stealer in Portsmouth is £170 ish and at independent (BARTLEY BMW) its £105 YOU pay your money and !!!! :( :)

Not really interested if my coolant protects to -60 or -50 if it happens to deteriorate.

adam d,not sure mate, its on my paperwork that coolant renew

£39.92 inc vat
when i work out ho to send pics, will send a pic
of paperwork.

hey your puzzled, how you think i feel, will go back to dealer and put your
point to them

no, u didn't really get charged more than most other stealerships ... but keep in mind every "service" by the stealership comes with a car wash, a big hole in your wallet AND @$$ after they Butt-F*%$&! you on their pricing!! :x

sometimes you can negotiate with them though, making it more reasonable to do the servicing there. like if you are getting buying the part and getting them to service it, ask them if they can throw in the service and you just pay full price for the part.

oh yah and most long life coolant is 5 years or some huge mileage limit (ie. you will hit 5 years before you hit the mileage) ... approx mileage rating is 250km or 150 miles OR 5 Years, like your warranty, whichever comes first

especially in a roadster, most likely won't even hit half that mileage in 5 years (i know i'm generalizing) ... can't imagine ANY fluid protecting the vehicle the way its supposed to FOR LIFE (i know the tranny fluid is supposed to be for life as well)

anyhow, changing the coolant takes about 1 hr and the cost of the BMW coolant isn't too bad ... although it is double the price of even the most expensive coolant at my stores. so if u want to avoid getting raped by the stealership, perhaps should diy

they charged for coolant renew, £39.92 in our money, thanks for all your
info E85,catch up with you soon, cheers, pub time,

It's not THAT bad is it?

Oil, coolant, brake fluid, about £80 in consumables to do it DIY anyway, then wipers, £30 isn't a crazy amount.

So £110. £250 for labour, and coolant, oil and brake fluid will be a good 2 hours I'd say, bleeding each calliper through, wheel off each corner, then back on, coolant, bring system to thermostat open, check for airlocks, bleed through.

I bet an independent would charge £250, and it's not a BMW dealer stamp, so maybe £100 impact on value/ease of sale come resale time.

Try own something French and use their dealers, THEN you will know pain when it WILL go wrong (often by their doing from last time they touched it ;) )
