DIY oil change-my job failed.

Guys what exactly do you think is the story behind the '25+5Nm' we find on the oil filter cap? Is it that one can torque the cap with a wrench that is set at 25Nm and if needed on can use 5Nm more?

Srhutch, I agree, it makes sense I think. Today I will torque it with the extra 5Nm and test drive it. I will get back to you with the results later. Thanks.

I just torqued the cap with an extra 5Nm and started the engine at idle mode. After 5 mins I was able to see oil coming out again. Very very little. I don t know what to suspect now.

I am not aware of any gasket there though? The ring of the filter is the one that makes the seal against the metal - what gasket are you referring to?
The one between the filter body housing and the engine .
On reading the post again the op says he can see the oil coming out were the cap meets the body,so it won't be the gasket.

One of the oil filters I bought came with a wrong size o ring.
So like someone said try fitting the old one.
My filter cap I only hand tighten to align a witness mark painted on by BMW in the past.
Never any leaks.

Really you just hand tighten the filter cap and you have no leaks? Thats lucky enough!

Update:

So, I decided to tighten the oil filter cap with an extra 5Nm on top of the 25Nm. I started the engine and after ten minutes I again noticed the usual very little oil leak that I was bragging about these last days on this very helpful forum. So then I decided that 30Nm won t do the job either. It happened that some time ago I had bought an oil filter kit from a site called comline auto parts, if you google it you will find it immediately. I decided to take the filter cap off once again and replace the large bosch oil seal with the seal that came with the oil filter kit from comline auto parts. Again, I started the engine, after 10 minutes I found no leaks whatsoever. I then went to test drive it and this time I made sure to make 20 miles instead of 15 miles like I did before. Once back home I checked for leaks and thanks God I found none. I hope I have solved the problem once and for all but two questions keep lingering in my mind. One, did I really solve the leakage problem or would it happen again on my next drive (as I explained in the posts before)? And two, if no leaks will happen, how could a seal from comline do the job and a bosch seal fail like this?

So how did you realize it had a wrong size o ring? And what brand of oil filter kit do you use?

Can't remember brand but the o ring thickness diameter was too small.
New o ring should stand slightly proud of groove.
I think the one's that have been ok are Mann brand.

I have heard about the Mann brand and filters. I also have read somewhere that the bmw oil filters are exactly like bosch filters but only boxed as bmw. I am not sure though about the truth of this. Just saying.

Bosch are like all other manufactures and can make or buy in dodgy components, at least you have sorted it now

Well I can t really be hundred percent sure I have sorted it out now because the first time I put on the bosch seal I drove for 15 miles with no problems at all and then two days later I was driving it again, this time for more miles and ooops, leakage again. Lets just hope history won t repeat itself when I test drive it again in the coming days.

I agree with you that bosch can make dodgy components but I looked in detail at the seal when I was going to replace it with the seal from comline and to me it had no flaws at all.

Would be surprised if any well known brand actually make filters.
When you see the cross references on some sites there can be like 30 brands.
Doubt if there's thirty factories in the World that make filters.

Well here's ten, I suppose the World is a big place;

Thanks for the info and for the link flybobbie. This weekend is going to be sunny so I am waiting to give my z4 another good test to ensure the leakage problem has been eliminated. I will update you guys later on.
