Dissappointed in BMW

2 weeks ago I started having trouble with the indicator on my 2006 M. It remains lit constantly even when the ignition is off. This drains the battery when I'm not driving it and makes using the car very dangerous as people think I'm about to turn left all the time!

I took it into a main dealer and the diagnosis cost £80! They told me I need a new light control module but the part is on back order from Germany and would take a week to arrive. Also, no courtesy car for 3 weeks! So, over the past week I've been carless which is a complete pain!

I took the car in this morning only to be told 4 hours later that the part they received from Germany was faulty! So I've got to wait another week for the next one to arrive! When the BMW garage asked for a courtesy car from BMW they refused because my car is 6 months out of warranty.

Totally pissed off!! anyone got a spare light control module?

thank god i've got extended warranty !!! :!:

same here!! just renewed mine, when you think even a bloddy lcm is 400 quid, theirs already half the cost of the warranty. so glad i went for comprehensive warranty!!!

dude!
had this exact fault, & called out BMW assist over 3wks (at Xmas.. 2yrs ago)

Is the warning light on, on the dash?

I had a failed indicator bulb, and the indicator light inside came on, & after turning off the ignition the amber light stayed on, had to jump start 3 times.

It was telling me it was a fault, & Assist told me.. when you turn off the ignition, & the indicator stays on, then cycle the ignition to fully on ( 2 / without starting) then back off, and the amber light should go out.

Replacing the bulb fixed mine, but the consequences of the fault were a lot more significant than the initial broken bulb. Fingers crossed it's the same & no LCM needed ?

That's exactly the same problem! Did your indicator remain lit constantly? When driving and when ignition off?

yes, the warning light on the dash is lit.

I've just called BMW Stratstone and asked them to try your solution. Will let you know.

Yes.. it was just the bulb. Apparently the light stays lit to "replace" the side light until you fix it, but I too had a flat battery which made me call Assist.

Engine off, ignition back onto 2, then off fully off = light switched off & no flat battery

Bulb is a lot cheaper than a LCM.

We tried repacing the bulb, that didn't fix the issue. Do you have to replace the bulb then carry out that ignition procedure?

Hmmm.. actually thinking about it, I think BMW Assist replaced the bulb but it didnt fix it, & it went to the dealer immediately afterwards.

Can't remember the fix now but I've got the Invoice somewhere.. but certainly the trick above took the urgency out of it.

You say it's a 2006 M.. seems a strange coincidental fault.

I just spoke to the guy at BMW and he told me they tried everything. They also tested the LCM on it's own and it showed a fault. As did the new one from Germany. Hopefully the next one due for delivery on Wednesday will work a little better.

Bloody German engineering!

On my e46 m3 i had a sidelight go which in turn lit up the adjacent indicator, new sidelight fixed it.
Gotta be worth a try.

BMW have my car now. I've phoned them twice to ask if they have exhausted all other options before going for the LCM and they say they have. I can't do much but take them at their word.

:(

if the part really is on back order then they are required to give you a courtesy car if the car is in unroadworthy state, if the dealer has no cars left then they usually hire them from enterprise car rental. if they refuse to do this call bmw customer services and let them know whats going on i'm fairly sure they will see you right as even when my dads 2001 530D motorway car had a pre-supply fuel pump fail (at that point worldwide back order for at least a week) the car was miles out of warranty 120k miles and due to the dealership not having a courtesy car available they phoned bmw customer services with the VOR number to prove it was back order and arranged a courtesy car from enterprise, admittedly it wasn't a like for like but it got my dad back on the road.

imo basically sounds like a very lazy service advisor not doing his job properly
the phone number is 0870 5050 160
let me know how you get on

thats done as a backup if the sidelight bulb fails (means the car is still road legal) thats not the fault in this case as yours would still have gone off when the ignition was off

Thanks mate! I called customer services and they told me I AM entitled to a courtesy car! They also gave me the service manager's name at Derby BMW Stratstone. After a brief conversation with him he told me he will call back in 10 minutes. 4 hours later I got a call from the service representative who originally booked my car in and he said the new light control module has arrived! That's a little strange isn't it? On Friday it was going to be Wednesday at the earliest but as soon as I call in demanding a courtesy car the part magically arrives from Germany! I've been told I will be called tomorrow morning with an update.

I'm still furious, I've been almost 2 weeks without a car!!! I've been thinking of ways to reduce the bill to compensate for this. Perhaps get them to remove some of the labour charge.
