Disaster

The emission light on my 07 2.0 Z4 has kept coming on and my local garage could find no problem. I took it this morning to BMW who informed the the catalytic converter needed replacing along with the oxygen sensors and wire harness and will cost an unbelievable £3,646 inc VAT. This is over half the value of the car and after protesting that its only done 58,000 miles they offered a £600 reduction to £3,000.
This is still a huge sum for a car worth only around £7,000.

It seems to me that BMW are replacing all the parts that could effect this warning light whereas it might only be be say the oxygen sensor that is faulty.
Is this wishful thinking or has anyone else had a similar experience.

Thank you for your help.

I would suggest getting an independent to look at it. Its an absurd cost from BMW. Get an indy view on the issue and cost.

If it was not a condition of my insured warranty, I wouldn't use the dealers for anything any more as they're simply too expensive and at times, don't take the care they should.

Get a second opinion. May well be the cat but I think you can do better on price elsewhere.
There are a number of out lets supplying Cats at very reasonable prices, hundreds of pounds not thousands.
A local indy or decent local garage should be able to do this work at a fraction of this price. Start searching the tinterweb.

I really cannot work out how they arrived at that price! Cat, 02 sensors etc even at BMW prices must be less than a grand and fitting would take no time. Sounds like they thought of a number and doubled it.
Reminds me of my Alfa Romeo that according to the main dealer needed a new steering rack. Indy proved this to be complete and utter bollocks. Never used them again and never did need to fit a steering rack!

thank you all for your help. I have got the error codes and will take it to an indy.

All your kind responses are much appreciated.

By emissions light, do you mean the engine light? I assume the car is driving fine? If you do a bit of Googling you'll find it's a common issue with many BMWs across all models. It used to happen to my old 5 series a lot until I changed the fuel cap. There are also dozens of other things that can trigger it such as split hoses.

A decent Indy will likely do a better job of repairing your car as well as being cheaper.

Contact these as they are breaking a 2007 2.0 SE they may have cat & sensor

BEHSUD AUTO SPARE PARTS AT: 07830310747 OR 01384891000

That's an absurd quote - it wasn't the dealership near Maidstone by any chance?

That quote sounds like a sick joke.

Did they give you a breakdown. I'd be astonished if they could really justify it.

There must be a reason that a car that has done 60000 miles sells for about 1/3 of its value when new.
Having to pay for expensive things like this is how things balance out ... otherwise no-one would ever buy a new car.

It's just equilibrium at work:
* when they are new, nothing much goes wrong (and if it does, it's under warranty), ... but they depreciate like crazy.
* when they get older, they depreciate less, but more bits fail, and servicing/parts starts getting expensive.
Either way, you pay.

To the OP. Why don't you ask for an MOT emissions test? That will tell you if you have a problem with your Cat Converter.
