Don't get me wrong Tim sure the 4pot is a nice car I just think it does not sound as good as it looks and thats part of the experience[ they all look great] I had a 320i and the engine on that just sounded like its had asthma although it went fine. :(

To be honest I do and I don't, performance and economy for me is fine, but it just sounds rough when cold and not what I would expect of a BMW, its not a patch on the Z3s engine for refinement and thats a 4 pot and 12 years old.

I've started to notice a few owners experiencing total engine failure on M135is so what does that say really.

I was following a Toyota GT86 this morning and starting to think nice car :? Looks good, reliability etc.

I've said that about the GT86 a while back, but check out those GT86 forums.. the posts aren't what you'd expect of Toyota.. they've Subaru engines remember.. the forums show gearbox issues, oil leaks, ECU problems etc.. Seems we're in an era of WTF quality.

Well the MK7 Golf has a number of issues too so I read, sticking fuel filler caps, DSG problems, fit and finish issues etc... Care to choose another? ;)

DSG has always been an issue for VW's.
 
I wanted the 28i but with the deal I got on the 20i I couldn't justify the extra £7k.
The dealer had two exact cars one 20i and one 28i and they wouldn't budge on the 28i price. Could of had a black one with less bits on it but decided that the 20i in the colour and spec I wanted was enough for me 95% of the time, and if I did want a bit more grunt I could get that done from AC Schnitzer for £2K.
Had a 23i for 3 years and I can honestly say i cant tell the difference on the noise, there's a nice burrble on the overrun too in sport mode.
Also I'm with Tim, as i think it's more responsive that the 23i.
 
I wouldn't count on that 7 year thing either because its a tiered guarantee. They bang on about 7 years, but that only covers some parts, with others covered 3 years and others 5 years etc. There's little or no winning. Best to get an east to maintain classic that doesn't depreciate, spend some money making it reliable and comfy.

Comparing a 3.0 to a 23i is basically like comparing a 3 series 323 with a 330. Totally different cars, they are not meant to be similar.

When I had the old 3.0si I had a 23i for a courtesy car and I too felt underwhelmed, but I wasn't really expecting them to perform the same!
