disappointed. ..

Chaps

On the subject of being disappointed, as a 23is owner I can't help being similarly disposed after reading this thread. I find myself wondering what someone visiting this forum because they are thinking about buying a Z4 would think. Anyone would think that the 23 is dog slow.......hello!!.....0-60 in 6.6 and 150 mph ain't slow!!

Thing is, performance is all relative.....I'm sure that on some Ferrari forum somewhere they are arguing over the 0-60 time of a 458 over a California. I bought my Z on the looks, colour, spec, price and because you need a hairy chest wig to go with it rather than hair curling tongs like most other convertibles...to be honest I couldn't have cared less which engine it had.

I use my mine mainly for cruising around with the missus loving the experience of open top motoring but you know what, when I do take it for a blast and flick the sport button, I always come back with a huge grin on my face......enough said.

Didn't you know, this is the mine is bigger than yours thread but I'm not dissapointed as I don't own a 1.8 :?

Tim.

This is not a mine is bigger than yours thread, it's about someone that tested a 23i and felt it slow, it's allowed. Some will be fine with a 23i, some won't.

Exactly. I realise my E86 coupe is lighter and with a bigger engine ergo faster but I I didn't expect the 2.3 to be such a meek performer, in so much so I asked if 'they were all like it'
It certainly wasn't a dig at people who own them however it was nice to see many current or previous owners being honest about how slow the really are, I was almost ready to buy the Havana brown one advertised on this forum and simply was seeking advice.

I thought they only did the breadvan in the M?

tsk tsk :poke:

I was talking about z3 not z4 though. Only ever seen a z3 breadvan so didn't know they did a z3 m roadster.

I realise that but there was an M Roadster, I think before the bread van and in Europe there was a 3.0 Non M bread van.

I wouldn't count on that 7 year thing either because its a tiered guarantee. They bang on about 7 years, but that only covers some parts, with others covered 3 years and others 5 years etc. There's little or no winning. Best to get an east to maintain classic that doesn't depreciate, spend some money making it reliable and comfy.

Heres your bargain classic :)

If that's really an M, that seems to be a real bargain. A replacement rear screen or hood needed perhaps but that seems to be about it. Ah, though I've now seek the mileage, and the year (meaning the 240bhp engine rather than the 315bhp engine in the 2000/2001+).

Simple solution to your woes is to buy a version with a faster engine then if it seemed too slow, TBH not sure why you would seek advice on that? It's either too slow for you or it isn't?

Simply became I asked if they were all slow or was the one I test drove a poor example. If you read my original post you would know that I was considering buying one? However it does seem that they are all slow so will obviously look for something that has the Go to accompany the Show.

I did read the original, but how is anyone else meant to know if the one you drove was a poor example? Everyone interprets fast in different ways. For example how do you know if your current 3.0 is a slow example compared to another 3.0?

Incidentally I wouldn't really class any of the z4s as a sports car if that's what you're after, they were really only marketed as a mini GT car and not a sports car. Yes some are fast, but you might be disappointed if you are looking at any that are going to perform like a sports car, unless you just like a fast 0-60 time.

What would you class as a sports car?

It's not really what I'd class as a sports car that I'm referring to, it's BMWs interpretation and branding, I'm just stating my understanding of what BMW class their car as. They have always referred to the E89 as a 'sporty roadster' and never marketed it as a sports car. Their own website has a very different descriptions, for example look at the BMW M sport page and their opening sentence is 'M. The most powerful letter in the world has always been a sure way of identifying GENUINE sports cars'. At the z4 page they just refer to sporty roadsters all the time (same as press launches). The outgoing z4 coupe was always referred to as a 'pocket GT'. They know that the minute they claim the Z4 is a genuine sports car, suddenly it will sit alongside the boxster, Cayman, AMG SLK etc. They could very easily have badged the 35i as an M given that it shares the same credentials as some current M cars but they chose not to. The write ups for the more powerful z cars was not great, talk of poor handling etc, and this is what happens when it gets categorised into something it is not meant to be.

That does not mean it's not a good car, I have an sdrive30i, but just because it has 2 seats it doesn't automatically mean it's a sports.
