Well, my Dinan obsession continues…please see latest post... :D

So, early this morning I call Dinan Engineering to inform them of the missing filter clamp that was suppose to come with my CAI intake. If you all recall, I had to go back to the dealer for this $4 part. It was no big deal to me, but I wanted them to know about this.

Anyways, after the discussion, I went off topic and wanted more information about there other products that they offered to our Z4’s. To my surprise, :o ..the Stage 2 Performance Engine Software was only 49 State CARB Legal, and obviously the missing state is CA. I must have missed this myself on there website too (getting old)... However, the Ram Air Intake Duct is 50 State Legal. I also went on the California Air Resources Board website to confirm this information accurate.

With that in mind, I called the dealership to inform them about the Software CARB Status and such. Apparently, they had thought the part was Exempt… .Hmmm. Being, CA compliant as I am, I mentioned that I would have to postpone my appointment for the software installation until a CARB exemption order is issued.... :(

With the Stage 2 Software on hold, all was not lost, because I went forward with the ordering of my Ram Air Intake. Once I receive the part, and after I install it, I will post some quick pics…..

Just checked UPS tracking, and my "Dinan Ram Air Intake Duct" delivery date has been rescheduled from tomorrow, Friday to Monday…D#$M!! IT!!, :headbang: I even had paid for “3-Day Select”. Oh well, there goes my whole early Saturday morning car modding schedule. I guess for now I can do some yard work instead :| ….LOL …

This is another long story (because I am venting).... :fuelfire:

As you know from my post above, UPS had rescheduled my package delivery 3 days later.... :headbang:

As a result of this, I was very disappointed :( , I was so excited to install this part into my Z this weekend too. So right before I left for the office I called their customer service department to request for an updated delivery status. The reply was that my package was in transit, and according to the system there is no way for them to make the delivery on 2-29. I sighed, and did not say anything, but "Thank you for the information, and I'll call again"…

So, yesterday, during lunch, I decided to call them once again. This time, I was not going to be as passive and I was not going to accept the typical reading of the above the monitor “cue card” - of “How and What to Say” When Dealing with Customer Calls…

As I get connected to a Customer Service Representative, I again inquire about the delivery status. The CSR tells me the same story, that delivery is scheduled for Monday, 3-3. At this time, I was feeling more bummed. Trying to be as calm as possible, and without being irate, I kindly ask if the delay was due to severe road or weather conditions. Following that, I faintly hear her checking the computer and she replies “No Sir, the system indicates that there has been no known or reported delay in transport, due to the weather or traffic conditions”… Then, I ask her, “If there are no delays due to weather or traffic conditions, can you be so kind to explain to me why is it that my delivery has been rescheduled?” There was a long pause, and she replied that “ the system does not show of any circumstances or reason why my package had to be rescheduled”.....Hmmm, and thinking to myself, I tell her that It would be understandable if the delay was due to weather & traffic, but this was not the case…So I ask again, for reason for the delay???? It was quiet again.. :tumbleweed:

To break the silence between us, I reinitiate the conversation and make a suggestion that, if the delivery vehicle is scheduled to make stop while in route to California, they can remove it, and somehow get it airborne. We both knew that it was already Thursday, and the only way for them to observe there initial delivery date that I had paid for, would be by “Air”. She immediately replied that particular type of service and request was not doable, and it was not there normal procedure. In addition, if this option were possible and to be considered, I would have to pay an outrageous fee $$$$$ for the urgency and upgraded delivery service....

I firmly replied that ….“I already had paid for 3-Day Select….The sender fulfilled there obligation by promptly having the item prepared, packaged and shipped out….UPS picked up the package on time, and the delivery was set for 2-29… Then to discover that there would be a 3-Day delay was not acceptable’….Again, there was another moment of silence.....

To gain some sympathy, I retorted to speaking in a pitiful tone, and claimed that this one little delay, will result in a chain reaction of other delays and the rescheduling and postponing of family planned events and work-related prior commitments, etc. etc. (I was grandstanding here)…. 8)

This time, the pause between the CSR and I was much longer than before, and as I expected, she placed me on hold. When she came back on line, she had said to me that all that she can do is enter all this information into the system, and forward it to her immediate supervisors, and that was all that she was able to do....

Ending the call, all I could tell her was, “Thank you”, and for some apparent reason, she began personally apologizing to me for the inconvenience, and it sounded very personal, and if she was very sad for me, (or these CSR’s can surely act at being sympathetic to customer complaints). Anyways, I had told her that she did not have to “personally” apologize, because “she” was not the one responsible and at fault, and that I sincerely appreciated her patience, assistance and understanding…etc. etc…

Well, as the story ends, early this morning, once again I was curious of the delivery status.... I go online, and to my surprise, my package had been re-designated to “ON-TIME, Rescheduled Delivery 2-29”. …What was also interesting is that under my delivery details, I see “Next-Day Air”. ..I said to myself, OMG!, they actually did it….

When I got home from work, my wife tells me, “you got another package”, and with a smirk on her face, asks me, “what did you buy this time?”….I replied, Hey, it's my birthday Monday, and its one of the presents from myself...lol

So, all is well, and the Ram Air Duct install is set for early tomorrow morning, and my son will be assisting me… I will try to post some pics after we are all done…(btw, the part is much bigger that I expected.....)

Honestly, I've discovered in my military career that calm and logical is way more scary and intimidating that irate and shouting. I think it's the whole it's the quiet things that will kill you mentality. Don't worry about what you can see and hear, but what you can't see nor hear.

Anyways,
Can't wait to see the writeup on this.

Good job on getting the CSR to do the "impossible" for you  They do advertise this kind of service for business clients on TV, so why not apply to the individual if the situation is caused by their mistake. :)

Well, the job is done, and my Dinan Ram Air Intake Duct is installed. Yahoo !!!

The install took place just this past weekend early Saturday morning.

At about 8:00 a.m. my son arrives at the house, dressed in fatigue pants and with a gray t-shirt that read “ARMY”… He tells me…C’mon Dad, let’s do it, let’s get this thing done…As for me, I was a little out of it, and joked with the way he was dressed, since I had not yet had the chance for my early consumption of caffeine, not too mention that I was somewhat aching from my morning workout.

First, we remove and examine all of the parts included with the kit. I then go into the kitchen and quickly take a picture of the main part, the Ram Air Duct, and so that some of you can see the comparable size of this part, I placed it next to my cell phone….

IMG_1584.jpg

If I may say so, the construction of this particular piece is quite impressive, and its fitment is a comparable to OEM, and is much larger than what I expected.

Once my son and I finished reviewing the instructions, we were off on a mission…

We first removed the bumper cover, which is, and as you all know, not a big deal. With the exception that my son was laughing at me, because I was somewhat hesitant to firmly pull and unsnap the bumper corners. He kept telling me, “you’re not going to break it dad, so pull”, it’s a BMW…. I replied “yeah right, it can still break”…. After the bumper was successfully removed, I had noticed that each of the lower left and right corner plastic covers looked really dirty and were cracked. I was bummed, and since the bumper was removed, I told my son that this is the best time for me to have these parts replaced. His advice to me was to first go through the whole install procedure and see what else are we going to replace/ or need.

IMG_1601.jpg

As it turned out, he was right. Amongst my bunch of tools, I did not have the proper size Torque Head to remove the two longest bolts that were set vertically to fasten the metal bumper carrier in place. First, we went to the BMW Dealership and I bought new plastic covers, along with some extra stuff. Then we had stopped at Sears Essentials to buy a No. 45 Torque Screw Head, and on the way back home it was important to pick up some Mexican Food. Oh yeah, Carne Asada Fries, with Guacamole, Sour Cream & Shredded Cheese, and Beef Rolled Tacos with green sauce, along with lighted salted chips and salsa. You all know exactly what I am talking about…LOL

Anyways, back to the install….

The mounting of the Air Duct was a piece of cake. The fitment was exceptional. However, I had slightly deviated from the instructions. I did not secure the edge of the Ram Air Duct to the center brace that was provided by Dinan. I decided to placed Heavy Duty All–Weather double-sided 3M tape on the top part of the Duct and secured it to the underside of the front engine bay frame with a metal clip.

IMG_1595.jpg

The second part of the installation that I had revised was the method to which the Dinan center brace was installed to the existing metal bumper carrier. Dinan provided an aluminum nut insert and bolt, and the instructions were to drill a hole on the inside of the bumper carrier to fasten the nut insert, then bolt on the brace. I decided to alter this procedure, because I never have liked nut inserts. LOL …Anyways, I drilled through the “entire” bumper carrier, front & back with a ½” drill bit. Then I mounted the Dinan brace onto the back of the bumper carrier with a high grade steel bolt and washer nut, and used the drilled hole in the front to hold the bolt in place while tightening the brace.

Once the Ram Air Duct was in place, I cleaned and dusted everything off (hate them latex gloves)…we then reattached the bumper, and the installation was complete….

Total install time, including going to the BMW Dealer, Sears Essentials, picking up Mexican food & eating lunch, and debating about the 135i, Z4M Coupe & the new M3, it was a good 5-1/2 hours.

The other thing that I admire about this entire kit is that you can't really visually notice it at all, unless you look up close into the grill, and there it is…

After the install, my son and I took the car for a drive. I can honestly admit that I can personally feel the difference in torque from stock performance. In addition, there is a deeper growl as the vehicle is at WOT. Once again, I was not in pursuit of the monstrous HP gains, and hey, I only have a 2.5i. LOL.. I just wanted a reliable and well-engineered and built CARB Exempt Intake System that suited my personal preferences….

If it is of any consolation, for anyone planning to purchase a CAI System for their Z4 and especially for those who live in California? Just to let you know, I briefly researched and have visually compared the other Ram Air Scoop to the Dinan Ram Air Duct, and I have to admit, and this is based on my personal opinion. Overall, and between the two, if one were to ask me, the Dinan is a much better part, both in engineering design and function. Also, and with regards to setup, in comparing the “air scoop” vs. “ram air duct” the locations of both units independently, you will find that the Dinan version has a much better placement for capturing the maximum amount of airflow. As well as having a larger cross sectional area for the containment of a greater volume of air mass.

The Dinan design did attract my engineering curiosity in that I was able to discover a few articles from various Automotive Engineering Journals and Technical Publications regarding the design of this very specific Z4 Air Duct. I was very impressed with the comprehensive analysis that was accumulated into the final design. I also found it quite interesting in reviewing the various computer models that illustrated various scenarios to divert water retention by 90% within the Air Duct. Once again, the final design solution was very ingenious at best.

The bottom line is, I know some may say that these parts may be excessively expensive, but one can be assured that much research and development, engineering and manufacturing has gone into there products, and they do work, regardless. :D

Me too.

I have been following the development of the RPI Scoops (on another board) but now I really have to take a real hard look at the Dinan.. Esp. since it is available.

This weekend though, if the parts come in time, I am pulling my Vanos unit and replacing the software (O-Rings) so the Vanos works as its supposed to....

Glad to hear that the Ram Air Duct install went smoothly and that you are enjoying it. I'm anxiously waiting to hear about your exhaust install.

1stKnight, Great writeup and informative, very helpful to the forum. We definately need to get together and talk about our toys. Only 48? Stay in touch.

So between the ram air intake and CAI, how much of a performance gain could I expect (both together)? At least in terms of gas mileage and butt dyno. Should I get one before the other if I decide not to them at the same time?

1stKnight, great write up
I would imagine there's still lots of air to cool the rad....
But, I'm curious if you noticed any difference in engine/water temp with the ram air taking up so much space?

1stKnight,

i must say... fantastic write-up. im hunting around for information on CAI and this one takes the cake. it totally sold me.. and.. not only that.. it heavily informed me with vital information.

and happy :driving:

and btw.. on digging up that California exempt info. i had no idea.... :tumbleweed:

I'm curious as to this as well.

That whole front bumper volume is happily fed by a huge intake area (lower intake and two kidney grilles), so I doubt water temps would change, especially as they are thermostatically controlled as well.

What does the standard intake trumpet off the airbox look like in comparison. I'd have thought this would be more effective if it was sat right up against one of the kidney grille backs :D
