0-60 in 4 seconds isn't too shabby!

I think this is awesome

I know its not everyones idea of a proper sports car because it doesn't have a petrol engine but it'll rip the pants right off just about most exotic machinery out there, with all that torque it'll feel effortlessly fast and good on fuel too, i'd love one :)

Like them or loath them a turbo diesel has loads of torque. I've been looking at a 330 X drive for my wife and the figures show it's faster than my 3.0 E89

The upside it's fast and has the economy that 2.0l four pots can only dream of!

A mate has an slk diesel and I shared the driving with him back from Scotland to london a year or so ago. On the motorway it was brilliant but pulled up outside my flat and stating the obvious, the racket it makes is very noticeably a diesel. every time we go out driving together he says God I love the sound your z4 makes

A car is about more than that.

Yes, but what ?

The 3.0 oiler six in my wifes Audi Is a joy and when attached to a decent auto box it's very difficult to determine if it is petrol or diesel.

If you like to hang onto loads of rpm I suppose its a no no,but low down grunt is tremendous.

640D GC/Coupe, yes... 'vert diesel/Z4 no...
I agree and the 640d`s performance and economy is impressive but it still sounds lousy though and that's why for me personally I do struggle to understand the appeal of a Convertible diesel because the noise/sound is one of the most enjoyable things in a Convertible for me and I am not sure I would fancy listening to a diesel engine with the roof off.

They sell loads of diesel Convertibles so I am in the minority I think with my view.

Does she wear ear muffs when she drives it!! the 6 pot in our 640d is a pretty good engine but you can tell its an oil burner at low revs easily but strangely at high revs it sounds better but I think that's the fake noise enhancement from the speakers though.

To be fair I haven't driven an Audi 6 pot diesel only the 4 pot diesel and from what you say then they must have nailed its refinement better than BMW have with their 6 pot diesel.

I suppose I make my judgements on a well insulated saloon car but i think a lot of folk are anti diesel based on four pots - I don't like them :)

As for the sound, isn't that is artificialy changed in a lot of modern cars?

Agree and I am not a massive fan of diesel 4 pots either and my 520d helped me hate them even more!!

The noise in the 640d we have is all artificial but they cant mask it at low revs and that's when it really lets the side down and it just rumbles/vibrates but then you expect that from a diesel because they offer excellent MPG so there has to be a consequence in refinement sadly, I have to turn the start/stop feature off as soon as I get in it because it vibrates the car big time when it starts back up when moving off.

You would think BMW would do a better job with its twin turbo 6 pot diesel to be fair but it just helps remind me why I love petrol engines so much. :D

She wouldn't know if it was a steam engine or one of those farm hit and miss engines! :D

The car does clatter a bit from cold but once heated thro it's superb. I'm sure Audi have used their race experience to good advantage.

Power delivery is one long reliable push. I think I'll have to stick my head out of the window one day and have a listen!
There's certainly no vibration either - I would certainly buy another. When I do try a 330d x drive when I decide she need to change, I will be using the Audi as the benchmark.

 at the engine bit with the mrs!

You make a good point about Audi engines and their race experience, don't get me wrong the BMW 6 pot diesel is very far from bad its just because I prefer a petrol engine I tend to look for flaws with a diesel, our old 330d was a fantastic all rounder and I really like the new one too. :)
