Devon Newbie - Hello!

Hello Zed Heads, and thank you already for the masses of info I’ve been zipping through like I was swimming in treacle!

What a great site, and I’ve already got a long list of mods, detailing and bits and bobs that have all been informed from here.

So, I’ve taken delivery, via a frantic last 5 sec EBay auction, of a broken, entry level Z4. 2.0i 2005, 76k miles in what I think is a really nice deep red. When I say ‘taken delivery’, I mean it was immediately put on a low loader and whisked off to my friends yard in Windsor to be fixed, so I prob won’t see much of it for a few weeks as I’ve just moved to Devon - picture to follow once I get it back.

I see no reason to tell my other half about this purchase until I have to, so keep it schtum for the moment, eh?

I’m just slightly about the special needs end of the mechanical spectrum but if and when I can I’d certainly like to contribute to what’s going on here in the future.

The two biggies to be fixed are:

1. Car won’t start! Previous owner quite happily drove to her local garage because the roof stopped working. While it was there they cleared a couple of fault codes and the car wouldn’t then start. They replaced the cam position sensors but to no avail. They then concluded it was a stretched chain and the timing was out. They packed it all up, gave it back to her and that was the end of that!

2. The roof motor has stopped working! I’m very much hoping Monsieur Bowser123 will be contactable to help me with this as I’d like the motor relocating and if possible fixing too! He looks like THE go to guy for this. I gather I have to post 3 times before I can PM?

MOT Advisories:
A. Brake pipe corroded. Yes it’s hard to believe isn’t it?

B. Suspension Arm Ball Joint (both), slight play. What the best fix solution chaps?

C. Both lower arm rear bushes weak. Is it straight to the Power flex bushes, as they seem very expensive (without having the car here to x-reference exact parts)?

Welcome to the forum, like you I'm a notice, but learning from the Pros on here

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Good luck getting your engine sorted - and you've already found the right man for your roof motor.

My car had advisories for 2 years for corroded rear brake pipes. It tends to happen where they run along the underside roughly beneath the passenger seat. There is a plastic cover that stops and the end of the cover traps road crud. Best bet is to get them replaced in copper/kunifer (which is what I did) because it'll last longer than OEM and is easier to fit without needing to drop the fuel tank to get the pipe to the driver's side rear brake into the brackets behind the tank. Nice to get 2 clear MTs since that was done. :)

I'm not so sure about the suspension, but my car will be going in for new track control arm bushes soon - when I was booking it in my Indy recommended avoiding polybushes. He said in his experience they were way too stiff for road use on a Z4, which is pretty firmly set up as standard.

Anyway, I hope you get it back soon!

Thanks Mr Tidy,

Copper pipes is a great idea! I’ll investigate, at a leisurely pace whilst I bite my nails I’ve the timing problems!

Mm

Welcome from a fellow Devonian, although I'm originally from Wales so I might not qualify for the Devonian title

lol. You'll qualify once you've lost your Welsh accent! Welcome from willand near tiverton. Sounds like you'll need to replace the ball joints at some point. Hope you get it started. Seems a bit strange that clearing codes put the timing out! Any new codes coming up?

Thanks Descarl.

I think it’ll be a long time before I’m called a Devonian too! Been floating around over the years and I’m moving down from Norwich so hopefully my last stop!

Other half is Welsh too and she def doesn’t sound West Country!

Hi Clarker,

I think my friend has fixed it! It sometimes gets lost in translation but essentially he’s put a new timing belt on correctly (I suspect the previous garage people bodged it back together), changed the followers, possibly a sprocket or two, so he’s got the mechanics sorted and has to go through and check any codes now. Cost me £700 for the fix and full service.

Roof is next!
