Defo getting a M Coupe now..!!

Just been up to the North East to test drive a M Coupe that a dealer had for sale. Although the car had a couple of cosmetic scratches (that would need paint), the car was straight, full BMW history, interior was good.

I was offered the keys and encouraged to take the car for a test drive with my missus. OMG what a car, loved every second of the half hour we were out and it means we are defo having one of these. :D The engine note is addictive and the handling is amazing. I didn't find the suspension hard at all to be honest.

Question is, the dealer has offered to re-spray the rear bumper and the rear wing, sort out an issue with the tyre sensors. Car has 28K miles and is £17K. I am just not sure that I fancy a car that will have had serious paint at this point. Considering these cars are now 7 - 8 years old, how many will have had some sort of paint work?

I am getting rid of my last car as I tried to fix a couple of small marks that ended up in the full panels needing doing and I came to the conclusion that the hassle is just not worth it. Not sure I want the same issues with a much younger car.

Being honest chap it all depends how good the paintwork is when its done..

A very good painter would make it almost indistinguishable, bad paint will stick out like a sore thumb, especially on the rear 1/4.. The back bumper is a bit easier to do and get away with match but does depend what colour it is...

One of the members had a black car and i think he had it done a few times before it looked correct, but i think that was more down to the skill of the painter..

if you want a blast in another one,im not far away from Wigan... Feel free to pop over in the holidays if you want..

As above, only way you can tell on a good job is with a paint depth gauge. So unless you are going to check every car you look to buy with one then the only difference is you will know this car has had paint. A lot of brand news car get repaired before the first owner takes delivery and are non the wiser.

My car will get some paint at some point. I really don't see an issue with having paint done properly. If it's the worry that someone will think it has been in an accident then get a written quote and have photo's documenting the work carried out. I have folders full of receipts for all my cars and bikes.

For me I look for someone who has maintained the car regardless of cost and I wouldn't worry about any paint issues. Engine issues and gearbox issues Is more of a worry than cosmetic.

Accidents happen, I wouldn't be afraid of a little paint. I'd even get a front end respray if badly chipped. The cars are now 6+years old, finding a decent one mechanically isn't as easy as it once was, so I'd rather get a bit of paint done on a sound mechanical car with low miles? BUt don't get it done cheaply. My last car had a replacement rear hatch and nobody could tell afterwards that it had been replaced - the paint was a perfect match and was interlagos blue.
Price it into the cost of the car or get the dealer to do it first for your inspection before purchase :).

Personally I'd use the paint as a haggling point and get it done yourself somewhere you trust. Anyone can spray panels on a car, but very few can do the kind of job you or I expect of them....

+1

Problem you have is this time of year a spray job could look fine due to poor light. You don't want to be cleaning your car in the summer and noticing that they have done a crap job.

And let's face it. Anything done through the main dealer is normally piss poor

That is the plan at the moment. They are going to fix the issues and myself and my missus may make another visit. Car was mechanically sound and lovely to drive, it's just looks like the rear bumper has rubbed against something and whoever has been getting in the passenger side had caught the paint with a zip or buckle.

I was going to ask about the tyre sensors. There was a red light on the dash showing a flat but all tyres were ok. I assume this was a faulty or un-calibrated sensor from when the wheels were refurbished?

As others have said, I don't mind if a car has had paint as long as it is good work.

I am less trustworthy of cars with 80K on, immaculate and people say "oh it's never had paint". Having spoken to many people in the trade it is amazing how many cars with delivery miles have already had panels done.

I would probably rather have the money off the car and take it to somewhere I know myself for the paint.

Interesting what you say about the ride. As a passenger in the Z4M, I found it ludicrously hard. However, having driven one back-to-back with a Mk1 Audi TT, the Z4 actually rides better - the TT is just as hard, and very crashy.

I may ask to take the car as it is and what they will knock off. I have a couple of mates who are painters and their work has been excellent.

Coming from a Mkiv Supra, I did not find the ride that hard but I was also on decent roads in the NE. Has anyone had any problems with the bonnet not shutting properly? It needed pressing down in each corner to get it to shut. Panel gaps were all fine so no damage, must just be a sticking lock.

Best to drop the bonnet rather than pressing down on each corner, less chance of damage.

What colour is it?

The TPS light takes readings off WSS...

If all the tyres are correct pressures, suspect WSS fault..

Just a thought ....is it this one ?

If it is the one Darren has linked to it has one odd wheel cap. Massive thing for a proper dealer to miss, stands out like a sore thumb and not expensive to fix?

Also cheap aftermarket cap is vile

I don't think it is, the one I linked has been talked about before, there's a thread somewhere, not a straight car iirc

Sorry for the high jack OP
