Deepsea blue PAINT EASILY MARKED

Yes, its very easy to "over paint" using the brushes supplied. I think the secret is to "build up" the chip with a few layers of paint, and then finally just put a lick of lacquer on. :) A day or so later I gave the area a good rub over with a polish to smooth it over.

Cheers Beemer - I'll give them a bash. Yeah I've had problems with using brushes that were too big - before. Then once you start... there's no going back... and you end up painting an area three times the size of the original chip !! Did you apply the lacquer with a toothpick an'all ?

I have an area inspector (or whatever the job title is) coming to my dealer to have a look at my paint. I have a blister under the bonnet on the front wing and terrible water marks ontop of the bonnet that just won't budge.

The car is Deep Sea Blue, a year old in July with only 5000 miles. It has been garaged all winter (ventilated and dehumified) and is washed and waxed to a very high standard.

Water marks appeared after there was some rain (well after the vocano debacle may I add) and then some sunshine that dried the water. I went to wash them off and they wouldn't budge. Looks rather bad

Have the same water marks. Clayed boot lid but marks still there.

Seems the water marks are getting pretty common - I have never had it on any previous cars or my current cars - wifes, daughters and my van. They are silver cleaned and polished/ waxed in the same way as Z but they live outside in all weathers with no staining. I realy don't want to have to hide it away from rain and or sun. Is this just BMW or jsut the z?

Not had a problem with watermarks but I can see the side sills being prone to a peppering of stone chips due to the wide tyres. Have you guys tried a fairly intensive cutting compound to try and shift these watermarks?

shambolic, did you say you had a Professional Detailer lined up go give the car a once over? Keep us posted how you get on, and the name of the person (if they do a good job :P ).

Hi yes I have also had the water marks problem. It seems the clear lacquer on this paint is damaged by just about any aspect of our environment. I have currently gone to town regarding waxing the car using a mixture of Meguiers deep crystal products then sealed with Autoglym Extra Gloss paint sealer. Car looks fab except for the bird s**t damage previously mentioned that seems to have damaged the lacuer. I too keep the car garaged and unused in the winter. Seems like madness that we are having to take such measures to preserve the paint on our £34K + cars!!!!!!!

Update on my cars paint and it isn't good i'm afraid.

BMW dealer has fooked my car. Left it in today for the area inspector guy to "inspect" the bleamish on the front wing and the water spots.

Get this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I arrived to pick it up I was told that the car would have to be painted to fix the bleamish. Now this mark is barely visible under the bonnet at the front wing and I was only concerned it might get worse but no it has to be painted.

Ok next problem. Water spots will also be "buffed" out when the car is in the body shop and that it was caused by "something in the water" and possibly "not rain water" but it would be sorted.

Then I was told they were washing the car :x they had been told not to. I went out to the car and holy good fook it looked like they had washed it with a brillow pad. Scores all over the bonnet and a large chip in the paint and scores deep into the rear bumper were a stone must have been in a sponge and the bleamish!!!!!! they had scrapped it away to examin it and left it showing bare metal. Yeah they have to paint it now!!!!!!!

I went totally mental. Only then I was given the truth to an extent. The lacquer they admitted had absorbed moisture and by rubbing of the polish in an area (leaving it very badly marred may I add) then heating it the water stain came out and they intended to do this in a body shop. I had told the service adviser at the time of collecting of this problem being mentioned on the internet (water absorbed but heating removing it) and he sayed he never heard of it yet he knew fine well that was what had been done to my car in a test. He fooked off out of the way and left the service manager to deal with it.

The service manager then tried to tell me the car had not been washed :headbang: Yes it was I had to wait until they finished it and they brought it round to me wet :fuelfire:

So the car goes into the body shop on Monday. I shall be making a full complaint to BMW UK as well cos i'm NOT FOOKING HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Service manger did state their body shop was very good. My reply "As you can't even wash the f*&king car proberly I doubt very much you can paint it"

Really gutted. Really really gutted. Car hadn't even a stone chip or a single swirl.

Not good at all. I am still waiting for the outcome of the dealers pictures that they sent to BMW of some paint problems.I know that bits will need repainting but my previous experience with silver cars is I can always see the colour change - it is spoiling my experience of what is in every other respect a great car.

my painter told me its only the basecoat that is water based the laquer is the same as before. my 3 series is covered in stone chips even though i never tailgate cars and dont do a lot of mway driving, driving alongside lorries gets your car sand blasted. my 1996 e36 by contrast has about 6 chips on it in 50,000 miles and 14 years! i think one of the causes is the terrible state of the roads they are continually disinegrating and are covered in small stones. the bmw hardwax you pay the dealer £400 to apply can be bought on ebay for £5 and is excellent wax but wont prevent stone chips.

Coming from owning four BMW's since 1998, I can tell you that BMW has soft paint and is prone to stone chips. I had tons on my Z3 and first Z4. I, too, was extremely careful with not tailgating, staying away from trucks, etc. The only thing that will prevent chips is to have the 3M applied. I have had it done on my last two Z4's and have not had one stone chip.

Z4andy, Not sure I would trust them with it. After its been painted, I would get in an independant detailer to give it the full works (polish and protection) - they will find any defects and judge how good the paint job was, and then send the detailers fee onto your dealer.

Yes I agree totally with your remarks and I know just the guy to contact. I am that gutted I couldn't even be arsed to drive it today. Just looking at the state of the bonnet makes me sick.

Might have to buy an iS to cheer me up :P

Z4Andy: your problem sounds like what happened to my paint. I have been detailing cars for many years and I had never come across these strange stains that occured in my clear coat after I had simply parked the car outside for a day in the rain.

I couldnt get these holographic water stains out no matter what compound I used, so I just gave up. The next day I parked the car again outside in the sun and they mysteriously dissappeared....no one believed me but now I know the reason; the clear on these cars appears to absorb and retain water! :!:

That's a very good description "holographic". I have heard that some BMWs are being put in a body shop oven to "re-float" the clear coat. The heat and strong sun must have the same effect. Need better weather round here.

Still thinking of an iS now. Mebourne red and black leather hmmmmmm.

Check out red with walnut leather...looks SUPERB!

Have you heard the more aggressive sound of the exhaust in real life yet? I am still hanging out to hear it....

Found a post on here: www.bimmerforums.co.uk about the same issue a chap had with his X6.After 45 mins in a paint oven the clearcoat fixed itself and the marks were gone.

Self healing paint? :?
