God that's a shocking price. Especially as they probably wouldn't AUC it so no prep costs - it would just get shipped off to the auction.
Where, sadly, it would probably struggle to fetch more than the dealer had offered.

I know for a fact through friends and a father in law in the trade that the car would go direct to an independent garage without it's wheels touching the BMW garage floor. I've bought cars through this channel myself in the not too distant past. The local Audi, BMW, Merc etc dealerships all have their indie mates that they offload the good prestige and sports cars to that fail to meet auc for one reason or another.

As everyone says, a car is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. With a bit of luck and timing you probably could get one for a little over £3k but you won't get mine for that and I dare say the one you did get would be an absolute jobby mobile that would shortly be heading for a big bill or the scrap yard.

The dealer has simply offered you CAP lowest figure.. The lowest value in the trade guides. Next is CAP average, next is CAP clean.CAP stands for Car Average Prices, the motor trade guide that is suppposed to keep a record oa average auction trade prices of all cars. It is frequently very wrong, for example, in the Toyota network, the dealers are buying used stock from closed Toyota auctions ( disposing of management cars and finance repo's and ex contract hire fleet stuff) and having to pay sometimes up to £ 2k more than CAP average to buy the cars. They then have to prep them and add a margin. So, CAP valuations MUST be massively wrong for these cars. This dealer has simply kicked your car squarely in the nuts, very lazy salesmanship. I suggest this is why they are failing to hit their targets. The Sales Manager needs shooting and replacing.

They gave you a price that they would be willing to pay - simple as that. As the customer, you have the right to accept or reject that price. It's not complicated, it's not rocket science, it's called business.

It's not nice when you get told that the value of your car isn't what you thought but it's time to stop whining about it and man up and take it on the chin.

You're right Jake, they gave me the price that they thought they might get away with paying. I'm fully aware of how business works but thanks for the pointer

The point of the thread was not to whine about not getting a good deal or the value of the car. After all, i've said I'm not changing right now (my wife would kill me if I did). I guess I'm a time waster but the salesman looked like he'd had enough of solitaire that day so I thought i'd give him something to do.

Bigshurv gets the point, lazy salesmanship. Shouldn't really have expected much from that dealer anyway. Last time I went in I was looking for a 330d tourer and they acted like they weren't interested. I went straight from their showroom to Audi where I was treated totally differently and ended up buying from them. I got a call from the BMW dealership about a month later and they hung up on me when I told them i'd bought an Audi

£3.2k sounds very low to me. Just as well really, but you always need to take into account the price (and any reduction) of the car you're trading something against. If they give a healthy discount then fair enough. Cost to change is key, but I guess you know that.

Not always, My e90 had been traded into John Clark BMW dealer in Aberdeen but (I assume) fell outwith their AUC criteria: 76k miles and almost 5 years old. It was immediately, i.e. within 4 days, punted through auction in Kinross. My F-in-L works in the trade and alerted me to it. Seemed strange to find the car there as it was in great condition and would've surely made much more £££ via an independent garage.

Fascinating stuff! Cars are really very, very cheap over there! :?

This comparable 2004 Z4 here in South Africa sells for +/- GBP 14k at the current rate of exchange which is around ZAR 13,20 to GBP1. Have a look at this link.
