Dealer has used wrong oil on service

You have to select your car marque & model in this database to get it to show you what they consider the correct oil.
Thank you mmm-five.
There is one type that is only available from the stealers: "[Ultimate]: Castrol TWS Motorsport 10W-60 [Refer to Authorised Agents]"
Then there is a type that is available off the shelf: "[Premium]: Castrol Edge Sport 10W-60"
Would there be a real difference between the two, or is the one from the stealer merely expensive packaging? :scratchhead:
The two products are slightly different, and in the UK we have 'Castrol Edge Sport 10W-60' and 'Castrol Edge for BMW M Engines 10W-60' - it's the 2nd one that BMW says we should use in the S54. However, we can buy both from any reputable motor factors.

If you look at the chemical analysis of both products you will see a small difference in make up of the oils, and whether that's important or not I'll leave to you to decide.

'Castrol Edge for BMW M Engines 10W-60' used to be called 'Castrol TWS Motorsport' but they changed it for some reason.

Car: As deduced.. it's a 3.2M (2006)
Oil: Castrol SLX LL04 - as listed on the service invoice. Confirmed with Castrol today that it's a 0W-30
Fully Synth: Yes
Garage: BMW main dealer

Hoping that as mentioned they just put all oils down as the same on the invoice.

Thankfully I've not done many miles in it and they've been pretty gentle.

Back to the dealer for me. Quietly point out the apparent error and ask what remedy they suggest. As a minimum fresh oil of the right grade (10-60) a.s.a.p. (while you wait) and some compensation for your time.......money off next service.

- and as confirmed by my Indy, who is an ex BMW workshop manager, the correct oil to use in the S54 M engine is 5W-30 - certainly in my (admittedly warmer than the UK) neck of the woods.

Anybody else have a different recommendation?
Perhaps his business is slow and he needs a good re-build job on an S54? :)

BMW switched from 5W30 to 10W60 on the S54 around 2002 due to damage to the big-end bearings at high revs with the lighter oil. Even in Canada where I've run my S54 below temperatures of -30C, 10W60 is still the only oil BMW specifies for this engine. 5W or 0W oil is normally recommended in cold climates compared with 10W, but not in the case of the S54.

Castrol Edge is designed for the commercial market, Castrol SLX LL04 is the trade version available to trade purchasers.
Hope this info helps aleviate your apprehension!
I always change my oil every 6 months and do it myself as I know it has been done properly.
Regards Jim

Maybe for a non-///M, but the OP has an ///M.

Here in ZA, unless one goes to the stealer, we can only buy the Edge product. TIA...

I downloaded the Technical Data Sheets and the viscosity of the 10W-60 TWS/Edge for BMW engines and the 10W-60 Edge Sport at 100 C differs by 5% and the viscosity index differs by just under 4%. (Compare this to a difference in viscosity at 100 C of 50% and in viscosity index of 13% between the TWS/Edge for BMW engines and the XLS 5W30 BMW that I have in there now) I think the two 10W-60 oils are close enough for my purposes, as I never track the ///M and only use it on weekends. In any case, the 10W-60 Edge is A LOT better than the XLS 5W30 BMW that my Indy sold me.

My guess is that we in ZA are simply behind the times and the name change is still on the way. Our newspapers carried a story last week that Monty was going to give Rommel a serious beating in the Western desert shortly...
