Dead 4 - a phoenix from the flames. What would you do?

For anyone who has followed my tale of woe....

After buying the car back from me the dealer has fixed the gearbox (wiring fault) and offered it back to me at almost 2k less than I bought it for. What would you do?

How much did you like it?
Are they convinced they've fixed it?
What sort of warranty would you get on it?
Do you want to risk the hassle of travelling so far again?
Have they fixed all the other list of faults?

If you're still thinking yes, then offer £3k less.

And use the £3k saving to buy a cheap E85 to use when it breaks again. :poke:

You've had a lot of grief from that particular car, even if you bought it back at a discount, it'd still be niggling in the back of your mind so you'd never really enjoy it

I know one guy was struck off the forum for using colourful language to suggest the OP contemplated alternatives...I thought his underlying sentiment was understandable...

It’s clear, by now, that the 35i is a lucky dip exercise more so than the NA 6 pots or even the turbo 4 pots..

For someone who is technically well read and competent preferably with good spannering capabilities and a good garage to work in a 35i may be an excellent opportunity to have high performance at low cost supported by their skill set..

The OP, from what I deduce, does not fall into the above category and therefore should prioritise something with less predictable series of faults n issues...all IMHO..

What about the other issues it had?
“ I now have the report back from BMW. Gearbox mechatronix to be replaced. That comes to nearly £4k. But that is not all of it. They checked the rest of the car and I have a leaking shock absorber (MoT fail). An alloy wheel that has been welded. I guess because it had been cracked. Oh, and a number of tyres worn. I have had the car 6 weeks. For all I know I could have been driving around in a car that would have been an MoT fail from day 1. This sounds like stuff from a back street car lot not a main dealer”

If an ex-girlfriend who was hot, ....but more than a little bit ‘fatal attraction’ got back in touch after you’d escaped a ‘sleeping with the enemy’ type situation.... would you jump back between the sheets?

Some cars are just trouble. It doesn’t matter what you do to them, they just keep creating new faults or have problems with reoccurring faults. This could well be one of those cars, but on the other hand it might have just suffered a failure that has now been repaired, you just do not ever know.

The fact that you was able to hand the car back to them and not even take a second look when you did says to me that you really didn’t have much of a connection with that particular car.

To this day I really could not tell you why I brought a Z4. I will get shot down in flames for saying this, but I actually think there are far better cars out there which come under the the same category as the Z4, and I had the option of buying several, but there was just something about mine that caught my eye. From the test drive onwards I just connected with it. There were elements of the test drive I didn’t like, such as the notch from the gearbox, the rattles, the tramline from the runflats, the unexciting engine noise, but I was able to see through that and felt like the car had real soul.

I find myself always looking at my Z4 wondering what it is that I find so appealing, and to this day I still could not tell you, but what I do know is there is something about this particular car.

If you haven’t found that with yours (or what was yours) then maybe keep looking. Just my thoughts for what it is worth.

If he did... and was at it ‘Fast and Furious’.... and then she turned all ‘Bride of Chucky’ and it all got a bit ‘Armageddon’ he’d have wished he done a ‘Forest Gump’ like the ‘Marathon Man’ rather than needing to report back to the ‘platoon’ on here :poke:

Oh, I already knew what I was going to do before posting this. It's arriving Monday....... Nah, thanks for the offer, but no thanks!!! If I could run I would do it.

I may have too - but that isn't a long-term commitment.

Whereas buying a car tends to be more than a 1 night stand.

I think the OP has made the right decision - if he bought it again he'd just be waiting for something to go wrong (again)!
