For anyone who has followed my tale of woe....

After buying the car back from me the dealer has fixed the gearbox (wiring fault) and offered it back to me at almost 2k less than I bought it for. What would you do?

The £2k is irrelevant :( how many miles & how much ?

Lookout, Andy's scouting for another 35i  . Don't believe you've had a pleasure of a DCT yet? Hang on, you would have had one in your 35iS.... hard to keep up, mate

I have indeed & would never have another  the manual 35i was far more involving & enjoyable to won "but" mine was never a daily .
Currently have a 5 series F11 with the 8spd ZF auto , that is a far better , smoother box imo :o

How about the other issues the dealer uncovered, what’s happening with those? :?

Aye, He didn't mention those. I don't know what their motive is. Thinking they are doing me a favour to restore faith in their company or maybe this 'clown' will go for it and we can offload. The biggest problem has been I am in Norfolk and they are in Reading. Which, of course, will not change.

Why the big hooha over revealing the price it was offered to you at :?
A forum trawl reveals you payed £18500 for it initially so must assume its now offered at £16500
If its below any similar specced , miled example surely its worth taking on , you clearly thought it was worth paying " x " for previously , its now £2k cheaper yet you aren't considering it worthy of consideration .
The phrase " cut off the nose to spite the face " springs to mind but hey , vo 35is are everywhere aren't they
The "list" of problems are hardly major now the gearbox fault is sorted

"I now have the report back from BMW. Gearbox mechatronix to be replaced. That comes to nearly £4k. But that is not all of it. They checked the rest of the car and I have a leaking shock absorber (MoT fail). An alloy wheel that has been welded. I guess because it had been cracked. Oh, and a number of tyres worn."

Hit them with £15k then meet in the middle at ££15750 , spend a bit on the wheels , tyres if they are not already sorting those issues & crack on knowing you've a decent "low" mile 35is at virtually trade money

Assuming the OP still want's a 35is, that would be my thoughts exactly. The wheels and weeping shocks are no biggies and the only real issue is the gearbox, if they have fixed it and can give a comprehensive warranty there is no reason not to take the car at a sensible price.

Walk away... there are many more fish in the sea

Now for sale at 20k - https://www.sytner.co.uk/bmw/car-search/11250403-1342633-bmw-z4-35is-s-drive-2dr-dct/

So maybe the dealer was trying to keep you sweet with his price if he is offering it on the open market for £20k ?
Ultimately the decision is yours alone well knowing the cars history and previous problems.

I am happy with my decision though it was a tough one to make. I am still thinking about buying another car but maybe not a Z4. The trouble is there are not many 'sporty cars' in Norfolk so if you spot something it is miles away. I got that one in Reading which is 3 hours. I will just sit tight and see what comes up.

I bet the dealer says nothing to the prospective buyer either - He will be in for a shock if he signs up to this forum!

A shock about what ? :? a used performance car that's had need for repairs isn't exactly news at ten .
Ive read all the OP has had to say & imo he's had sand in his fanny from the off .
Providing it passed muster at the point of trial-inspection-handover id buy the car tomorrow if i was in the market for a 35is .
You don't even guarantee a flawless example ordering up a brand new one .

After a quick scan of the posts I detected the “it’s a dodgy car” theme - maybe a new buyer would form the same opinion?
I also detected a bit of vitriol in a few post - I didn’t really understand why.
