De-icer in eye

My neighbour covers the top section (windows up) of his car with a sheet in winter, takes the sheet off in the morning and drives off with no de-icing at all.

I try to use just heat on the screen, front side and rear windows on the wife's car - all from inside, heaters on full with demist on. To avoid scratching, but also to avoid damaging the rubber seals with the edge of the scraper. Only ever use de-icer on the wipers to unfreeze them or they are useless. Sometimes on the skooshes too (Though the Z skooshes are heated, right ?).
No need on the Z anymore as it lives in the garage, unless it is parked up outside at work late.

As a long time resident of the tundra of the northern plains of America I have A LOT of experience with ice. If you use an ice scraper. Make sure it's either brass or plastic. I have seen aluminium ones. And while it's to soft to damage glass. It will leave a smudge of alu on the glass. A metal ice scraper that is made for glass will not scratch glass. Another rather novel way to deice the window that I find easy to do is to use the new fangled invention of the defrost setting on your heater. 
And if you have an alcohol based cleaner solution in the cars spray tank. That works as well.
Another neat trick is that if one is expecting ice or snow. Put your wiper blades up to keep them off the glass. That way you can use the alcohol jet nozzles to clear the window while you wait for the heater to come to temp.

Glad to hear it..they checked my cornea after the wash out with bupivicaine drops and fluorescein dye and thankfully all ok. Probably overkill but better to be safe than sorry later.

I've never had a problem through using warm water to clear my windows. I've even done this in -20 degrees in Slovakia...
When snow is forecast I cover the front and rear screens with impervious theatre drapes so I can just lift them off in the morning taking the snow with them
Ruby, I hope the A+E doc took advice from ophthalmology? Some chemicals need additional treatment not simply irrigation.
