De-Badging or Should That Be Debagging?

Yesterday I saw a silver BMW 3 series (or was it a 5 Series they all look the same to me) that was devoid of all adornments apart from, of course, the BMW Roundels.

My initial thoughts were that compared to other similar cars I saw the back end looked quite neat and clean and I guess understatedly OK.

Then for some inexplicable reason I had a burning desire to get a marker pen on it and write "Poverty Spec" across the back.

Fortunately though I couldn't carry out this act of wanton vandalism as I was following it down the outside lane of the M40.

Is it only the low rent models that get this treatment or do people also do it to bigger engined and top of the range models for the look?

I gather some people like to add an M badge to a non M car, but I can't imagine anyone purposefully having one removed from the genuine thing?

Is there a willy waving/reverse willy waving thing going on here or am I just missing the point completely?

All models of BMW get this treatment of de-badging even ///M's, but I have to say I'm proud to show mine off, although my company car 118d M Sport is de-badged.

My old 3er had no badges from factory. Not poverty spec. Model deletion was an 'extra' charged at £150 back then... :o

From what I've seen, the lower spec models usually get the model badge deletion, some will say because it looks clean, but I can't help but wonder if they've removed it so no one will go 'oh, you got the cheap one then?'.

I've never seen a 35i/is on the road without its badges for example, though there may be some, but I've seen a few 20i/23i's without... just my observation, as I say, people do it for different reasons.

For me, I'm happy with the way it looks, and I'd only ever consider removing the badges if someone told me it made it more likely to be stolen perhaps. But then the twin exhaust will probably give that away anyhow.

I'm seriously considering taking the ///M badges off the sides of mine as they are increasingly looking just plain 'wrong' to my eyes.

As previously stated debadging is an option when ordering a bmw, they call is Model designation deletion. On the flip side, my neighbour just got what looks like a M3, something doesnt quite look right with it though, turns out its a 318 with a bodykit.

I think the badges on the side of the z look wrong but still keep the one on the rear.

I agree re e85, but the rear badge on the E89 is just wrong wrong wrong.

I had my rear badge removed before delivery. Looks cleaned and balanced IMHO.

I removed my z4 badge the other week

It looks better for it

Kept the 3.0I on the side though

I dont think the badges make the car look cluttered, if anything mine was debadged and I thought it looked stupid... Most cars I have seen debadged are poverty spec in the engine department im afraid. On the Z4M there are only 3, possibly remove the side ones simply because they were clearly an afterthought and not integrated into the design what so ever unlike the M3 or M5.

But I like the badges

mine was debaged when i bought it, it only says Z4 and have the proud roundel. probably the first german owner did it, but looks nices without 2.5i on the side and rear

I took my 3.0 Si badges off because it looks cleaner. Not precious about displaying my size :P , be it large or small. If anyone thinks I am hiding a teeny engine I can soon put them straight, if I feel the need. I have however left the Z4 badge where it is because I like it.

If I had an ///M I would leave all the badges on. It's a performance mark, not an engine size, and in any case I think it looks good.

I removed all of mine because I was fed up removing polish and wax from them, It's all very well using cotton buds and the such but honestly who can be bothered with that. People may think "oh he has removed them therefore his car must be Poverty spec" but then again I don't really give a crap what other people think, anyone in the know would know what my car was, their thoughts on it are their opinions not mine.

If I had a ///M I would still debadge which blows the "poverty spec" opinion away. I think debadging is a personal choice and not a Banana down the trousers mod.

I reckon this could be a perfect example of a banana down the trousers Mod
