DCT Gearbox better NOT in sport?

Hi all - still really new to the car, only done 500 odd miles in it so still learning.

I don't know if mine is weird, if i'm doing something wrong or what but i've noticed while on the move (maybe from 40mph ish) if i floor the throttle the pick up is quicker when the gearbox is in Normal (D) - is this normal?

i don't mean the throttle response, i mean physically how quickly the car gains pace - slower when pushed to the left..

:sos:

GearStick pushed to the left is manual, I’m not being flip but are you in too high a gear when you floor it...? Eg, 4th in a manual car and do the same...?

Thats my thought as well!
Just leave it in fully Auto Mode and let the gearbox do the thinking for you - I rarely use the paddles!

The shift points get higher as you set it to more aggressive modes (Sport, Sport+, S) and the gearbox will allow less slip during changes so the shifts are quicker.

It should pick up faster in the more aggressive modes as the revs will be higher so turbo spools faster. If not then maybe there's a problem with the car. I can't think of anything that would cause symptoms like that though.

At the moment as it is still new to me I go for sport mode in auto. Well, when the missus is not with me. I took it out tonight just for a blast and I mean a proper straight line floor it type blast and it takes off. I did set the 'bong' at 50 coz this is Norfolk and I am old.

If you’re bumbling in auto at 40, probably 5th or so and you stick it in manual, I can’t remember if it shifts down a cog or stays in 5th...if so he’s in the wrong gear for a floor the throttle blast no...?

Putting the lever to the left only engages S mode. You have to manually change gear before the gearbox goes into manual. Having the lever to the left without being in manual is a mode in itself.

You're missing a lot. :driving:
Totally agree !
Also I’m sure someone on the forum has previously said it improves fuel economy ?

That’s it yes thanks, I couldn’t remember tbh, I’ve only had three DCT E89’s...

So really OP needs to say if he engages a gear manually after moving the lever left, or just floors it straight away enabling kick down.

Does the DCT box 'learn' adaptations like the ZF boxes?

If so does a previous owner's 'bimbling' contribute to a sluggish response?

Would a re-set have any benefit?

The adaptation thing is a bit of a myth. No part of the car learns anything about the driver, that type of operation would require advanced machine learning.

Adaptations are trim values that are designed to compensate for design tolerance and variation in sensor feedback. For the gearbox the adaptations will include trim values applied to oil pressure setpoints to compensate for ageing oil and friction surface wear.

The gearbox has fixed shift points which are selected on RPM and accelerator pedal position. There is some variability with the shift patterns in what's called a dynamic shift mode. If you are aggressive with the accelerator pedal the gearbox silently switches to a "dynamic" shift map that has higher shift points for a period of time, these shift points are still fixed though, no black magic involved.

So to clarify - this is all in auto, no manual override..

driving along, car in sport, gearbox in sport (it shows S1, S2 etc on the dash) then flooring it doesn't give me (or doesn't seem to give me) as much acceleration as when the gearbox is Not in sport.
