Daily drives

My daily (now not a daily as it only gets used every other weekend like my M Roadster) is a 2006 manual E90 330d with a stage one map. It really is a quick daily (effortlessly so, you don’t need to rev it above 2000 rpm to make good progress) car that is super frugal with it. Owned for 10 years, owes me nothing, has never let me down in 93,000 likes (now on 193,000) and feels tight as the day I got it. Had plenty of playtimes against much newer more powerful cars and it still surprises me. I intend on it going another 10 years in my hands.

That's very close to my pair!

Z4MC and 2005 manual 330i, which has worked well for me for nearly 5 years. But your E90 is a much better colour than mine.

JL has gone back to a Mini Cooper S. walked in to the Cambridge Mini dealership to look at a used example and came away with this beautiful car. The Fiat was v pretty but this is a seriously good machine to be in as well as look at. Brilliant purchase experience too. So we now have the 23i Z4, a 2013 CLS M-B, and the Cooper-S 😎🇩🇪

I'm not a fan of modern minis (or modern cars full stop) but that is a nice looking car!

My daily (again)… anyway, my point is this: got a price this week for replacement MB discs & pads from my usual independent specialist. Before committing I picked up the phone and rang MB, who offered the same replacement for just £18 more, at a date and agreed time slot, sit and wait in the luxury showroom drinking their rather fine coffee. No brainer. Why are independents getting so expensive??!

The CLS has developed a hiccup… running a bit warm and declining top gear… some ‘fixes’ on Google but she’s booked with Bartlett’s p’boro for some tlc next week. Bracing for an unexpected bill

Update: if anyone is interested it was a faulty exhaust sensor, sending weird data to EMU. All fixed, tested and home without too much trouble, phew.

My CLS has been battered by the weather whilst the Zed sleeps off the storms under her blanket in the garage. Does give a chance for a decent pic tho

The company hack. Awesome little car for city use, costs nothing to run or charge, no tax, no parking costs and exempt from traffic restrictions. It’s the exact opposite to the Z4M!

My M is (still) my daily though I have a remote contract now and it does very few miles nowadays.

My wife had a 2007 318i as a daily - gutless, shit on fuel economy and with very few toys, but it did a job… then it got written off by a Mercedes wanker and we started looking at 1ers. PVR’s boy knows a lot about them so I tapped him up. Mistake. Had a ‘my mate is selling this though’ chat and fell for it hook line and sinker. It has all the standard visual mods you’d see on these cars, carbon bits on the inside and most toys except electric seats. The Harmon Kardon sound system is awesome. And the switchable BCS exhaust is ASBOlutely hilarious. As I’ve said in another thread, with the same power as the M delivered by that tasty B58 and an auto box, it terrifies me - the back end just wants to go sideways at the slightest invitation. It needs and LSD desperately but I don’t have £1,500 to throw at it right now. I do love it though, it’s pretty special as BMWs go.

I don't have a life, so I'm on here a lot.

Replaced JCW Countryman with Mazda CX60 PHEV. Only had the JCW for just over 6 months. I hated that everything had to be accessed from a central screen. Really dangerous in requiring you take your eyes off the road. Plus the interior had recycled carpet on the dashboard and plastic seats.
The Mazda still has physical switches and a good range of technology. It also has beautifully finished leather interior. It’s early days but I much prefer it to the JCW.IMG_0379.jpegIMG_0376.jpegIMG_0434.jpegIMG_0427.jpegIMG_0437.jpegView attachment 3View attachment 4

I didn't take the E86 off the road in the end (it's actually in this photo hidden by my Mitusbishi, parked on the pavement behind it), but the Lancer Sport 2.0 Estate is the official daily again.

I reckon it has probably depreciated at around £50 a year over the ten years I have owned it (and most of that is due to dings), and is currently sat on a touch under 80k miles (I think it averaged about 6k a year before I got it, and 3k a year since.

Absolutely love the car, precisely because it's practical and I don't need to worry about it. Feels weird driving it after 5 months of Z4... suspension is sloppy, clutch feels really light, whilst its fast enough for normal use it is SLOW. The seats are unimpressive and I can't adjust the drivers seat to how I want it (a touch of lean back).

I fear I have fallen into the trap that capitalism constantly sets us - I have allowed myself to enjoy something I did not need (the Z4) and it has made me appreciate less a car I love and have never had an issue with!

You have certainly had your moneys worth out of the Lancer. My wife would much prefer me to adopt a similar strategy as your’s. 👍
