Daily dilemma

So I've changed my job role at the company I work for this means I'll no longer need a van for work. I'll be office base now before I was traveling alot around the UK. So looks like my Z will need to become a daily as I only have the one car. My Z 53 plate 71k miles 2.5, do I buy another car or just chuck the miles onto the Z will be 40 miles a day.
what would you do? I'm thinking my car isn't exactly special so worrying about the extra miles is pointless and running two cars will be stupid. Opinions please!

My zed is special to me and I run it as a daily as I can't justify three cars between two drivers.

Might not be the most prudent when it comes to putting on mileage but get enjoyment every day.

I'm in this camp

It will work out far cheaper to just put the miles on the zed than buy, insure, run another car. Plus its summer so the commute will be more fun!

My heart wants to clean it every week and never drive it  I hated the van so basically just told them I didn't want it anymore lol my head says having two cars is pointless. Least it's "summer" now will give it a few months and see how I feel. Cheers guys!

Not true, if you buy the right car. I needed four seats though which was the reason I kept the zed and ran a pug 306 diesel. Over 54mpg and really silly cheap prices for bits meant I had a year of free motoring when I sold the car a year later compared to what it would have cost to run the zed for 12k.

Company car now which although I fuel says me running a daily.

depends on his insurance costs for a second car as well, road tax etc

Think my plan will be to use the Z for now and see how it goes. Probably end up buying a daily next year which I've wanted to do but couldn't while I have the Van.

There's also the carpark to think about or wherever you're parking the car during the day.

By a banger and keep it on the road until it breaks. Bangernomics example. Man Maths x mileage = Two Cars

Insure the zed with the likes of classic line and you can use the NCD on the other car as they don't use it.

Temporary thread hi-jack - I'm about to get another star here!!

Anyway OP, I think it depends how important it is to you to keep miles down on your Z4 but the M54 engines seem to be pretty good at high mileages and on a 53 plate I can't see it's value plummeting with more miles. On that basis if it does the job I would just put the miles on it and enjoy!

When I bought my first Z4C I knew I would need something else for taking my mother to hospital appointments (she is 94 now) so I found a cheap as chips 323F Mazda from 1996 with just 2 previous owners and 65,000 miles. Cheap road tax, non-interference engine so run until cam-belt snaps, 40 mpg easy - but it was so boring I avoided using it whenever I could! :headbang:

Man maths inspiration - I bought a 325ti instead so it's always an N/A straight 6 petrol with RWD now! Lovely, but as a result I didn't use the Z4C enough to justify 2 x insurance and 2 x Band K RFL.

Which is why I replied to a post from someone looking for a Coupe and ended up taking a deposit from him - 2 or 3 days later I realised what I had done, so had to go and find a replacement!

I probably should just go and find a 130i, but the Z4 feels so special whenever I use it I plan to use it more - hopefully split use roughly 50/50 with the 325ti. I mean, apart from RFL and insurance I can only put petrol in, or miles on, one at a time!

If I didn't need to do the elderly transport I would just have the Z4C - so in a roundabout way I'm back to my original thought for the OP I suppose! :?

Congrats on the extra star! I've decided I'll use the Z for now and next year I'll probably get a cheapish run around. I think adding the miles on the Z isn't going to affect it massively looking at prices on auto trader. Thinking 3k can get me something nice as my plan would be to only then use the Z on nice days. As my new role will involve a pretty big payrise in the next year when I'm up to speed I'm tempted to sell the Z and get a proper toy to justify having a second car I won't be using much if that makes sense. I used to have a vx220 which wasn't very practical but a great drive.

I'd go with the majority, Dan, run the Z as a daily and enjoy it. You can always pick up another if something untoward happens.

I've had a similar decision to make. Running 2 cars was getting too expensive, particularly around service MOT time. One of them had to go. So next month the Zed becomes our only car and the DD. Fortunately we are only a couple of miles from work, but I still have the dreaded works car park to worry about - I'm currently working out the best parking spaces.
I guess it will come down to what you can sensibly afford, in an ideal world I would have the Zed as a garaged weekend car - but the reality is I would rather have it as a DD than not at all :)
