Seem to be doing alot of this lately
I should have known better really
Ordered a new freestanding cooker from Currys recently, in fact its the same cooker I already have which is a Hotpoint Ultima but is now outside the warranty and has packed up. Anyways I included installation and recycling of the old cooker as part of the order. Installation is apparently done by a qualified electrical engineer as mentioned on the Currys website. Currys had to order the cooker from Hotpoint/Indesit directly as it wasn't in stock and it was to be delivered by them.
On the Currys website it mentions the electrical connections you should have, http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/knowhow-cooker-install-426-commercial.html
Mine is a hardwired outlet, i.e. the cooker mains switch is located in a wall cupboard and the mains cable is buried in the wall and exits the wall through a hole in the tiles behind the cooker and connects straight to the cooker terminals.
New cooker was delivered this morning but the chap from Hotpoint/Indesit refused to coonect it as he said he was only allowed to connect the cooker to an electrical junction/isolation box or plate on the wall. He said he couldn't connect it straight to the mains cable
I said no problem I will connect the new cooker myself and ask Currys to refund me the install fee. Its only like wiring a plug anyways, don't know why I asked for connection really

He said that I should really have a cooker isolation box fitted but it was upto me. I asked him to bring the new cooker in but then he said as he wasn't installing it he wouldn't be able to recycle/take the old cooker away even though I'd paid for this :x WTF. I didn't want the old cooker laying around house which why I asked for it to be taken away. He then said Currys are always doing this and that they don't check with the customer what electrical connection they have beforehand. There's no mention on the website that you should have a junction/Isolation box to connect the cooker too.
Told him to forget it then and he left with the new cooker and I've asked Currys to refund me the total cost, what a faff.
I contacted a qualified electrician later and explained what the Hotpoint guy had said he said he's talking rubbish and there was no reason why he couldn't have connected the new cooker and that I don't need a seperate wall plate or junction box. I'm pretty confused now who's right as I don't have a clue on electrics. Never had any problem in the past connecting cookers up in the same house.
Once my money is refunded I'll be ordering from another source and will connect myself, wished I hadn't chosen the connection service now as more faff than its worth.
Tim.
