Currys Rant again

Seem to be doing alot of this lately :)

I should have known better really

Ordered a new freestanding cooker from Currys recently, in fact its the same cooker I already have which is a Hotpoint Ultima but is now outside the warranty and has packed up. Anyways I included installation and recycling of the old cooker as part of the order. Installation is apparently done by a qualified electrical engineer as mentioned on the Currys website. Currys had to order the cooker from Hotpoint/Indesit directly as it wasn't in stock and it was to be delivered by them.

On the Currys website it mentions the electrical connections you should have, http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/knowhow-cooker-install-426-commercial.html

Mine is a hardwired outlet, i.e. the cooker mains switch is located in a wall cupboard and the mains cable is buried in the wall and exits the wall through a hole in the tiles behind the cooker and connects straight to the cooker terminals.

New cooker was delivered this morning but the chap from Hotpoint/Indesit refused to coonect it as he said he was only allowed to connect the cooker to an electrical junction/isolation box or plate on the wall. He said he couldn't connect it straight to the mains cable :( I said no problem I will connect the new cooker myself and ask Currys to refund me the install fee. Its only like wiring a plug anyways, don't know why I asked for connection really

He said that I should really have a cooker isolation box fitted but it was upto me. I asked him to bring the new cooker in but then he said as he wasn't installing it he wouldn't be able to recycle/take the old cooker away even though I'd paid for this :x WTF. I didn't want the old cooker laying around house which why I asked for it to be taken away. He then said Currys are always doing this and that they don't check with the customer what electrical connection they have beforehand. There's no mention on the website that you should have a junction/Isolation box to connect the cooker too.

Told him to forget it then and he left with the new cooker and I've asked Currys to refund me the total cost, what a faff.

I contacted a qualified electrician later and explained what the Hotpoint guy had said he said he's talking rubbish and there was no reason why he couldn't have connected the new cooker and that I don't need a seperate wall plate or junction box. I'm pretty confused now who's right as I don't have a clue on electrics. Never had any problem in the past connecting cookers up in the same house.

Once my money is refunded I'll be ordering from another source and will connect myself, wished I hadn't chosen the connection service now as more faff than its worth.

Good rant that.

It would seem that some of them are bound by some sort of secret covenant with what they can do.

Hope you have a good selection of carry outs to keep you fed during this carry on.

I would forget about Currys Tim and move on, i did that many years ago and have not looked back.

John Lewis for me, they will price match Currys too and give you a better warranty as well, so its a no brainer :)

Thanks guys, yes I will never be using Currys again. What annoyed me with Hotpoint is the fact they wouldn't take the old cooker away even though I'd paid for recycling as because they couldn't connect the new cooker they couldn't fulfill the contract with Currys which is just stupid. The guy suggested I leave the old cooker in the street for the scrapman which I didn't want to do. If he had taken the old cooker away I would have accepted delivery. Just smacks of jobsworth.

Will have a look at JL but found Appliances Online have the cooker I want in stock and used them earlier in the year for a fridge and found them ok but they do like to hard sell extended warranties which annoyed me at the time.

I Would have thought that
1) as long as you have an obvious and marked isolation switch within the vicinity
2) the cable was of sufficient thickness and suitable condition
There is no reason he couldnt have done it.

Just let him sweat like a pig caryying the ovens in and out and then apologise that you're not qualified to put the plug on the new kettle either....!

Lol yes I have standard 32amp I think cooker switch in the cupboard and the cable is the correct spec and thickness it's the fact it came out the wall and there is no junction box on the wall which is why he wouldn't connect the cooker. The cable is absolutely fine so I don't get it. The only reason I asked for them to connect is for warranty reasons as it says on the Currys website that the appliance should be connected by a qualified electrician. To me they might refuse any warranty claim which is unlikely but then.

+1 for John Lewis Tim.

Another +1 for JL.
By the way, why buy the very same cooker if your old one packed up just after the warranty ended?

I gladly pay the JL prices just to ensure I don't get annoying issues. Tumble drier went a few weeks back, they came - unpacked the new one, picked up the old one and all the wrapping material. Gone in 5 minutes - I installed the new one.

We've used JL for our cooker and AO for washer and fridge, both had excellent service and I would recommend them happily.

As for the old cooker. Just leave it at the end of the drive and the "do as you likeys" will have it away within 5 minutes.

the other option with the cooker.. contact your council.. they offer 4 free "large" collections a year - from beds to large free standing freezers.

JL are the way to go, we bought a new mattress from them, they delivered the new one and removed the old one in a bag.....stops the neighbours seeing all the stains

Thanks everyone :)

I've had quite a few rugs from JL the past few weeks and they've always been great etc, unfortunately they don't have the cooker I would like as want to stick with Hotpoint  . Only reason being the cooker sits next to the washing machine which is also a Hotpoint and in Graphite same as the cooker colour so I've been told they have to match up  Been generally pleased with Hotpoint stuff for the price just unfortunate this cooker has conked out. I suspect its the main heating element which has gone on it as the fan still runs etc. Same happened on the previous cooker which was a Mattisse, you could see the element had burnt out so got a replacement and fitted it but the cooker still didn't heat up, so just can't be bothered this time around. Cookers only seem to be made with a certain life span these days.

Regarding the recycling I think it was just the delivery guys attitude that pi$$ed me off as I had paid for recycling etc and his answer was to dump it on the pavement. It was just the principle of it and lack of customer service etc.
