CUP HOLDERS (What's the fuss all about)

I don't get why people get excited about having cup holders in their Zeds. I didn't have them in my Cortina mk1, Vauxhall Victor FE. Renault 12. Ford Capri, Ford Escort MK 2 and 3, BMW E34. Don't they just get in the way ? or break ?. When Zeds go up for sale people ask "Has it got the all important cup holders" ? Is this a tongue in cheek thing ? :?

Gotta say in my old zed over 5 years I think I used them twice, but i guess if you like a coffee in the car i can understand

It's more of the case that if they don't have them, you'll find it very difficult to find a set afterwards...so if it comes with them then all the better.

If you never drink in the car, then you won't need them, but I fend them useful on long journeys (e.g. my 4-hour commute between Liverpool & London; or my trips to the Ring)...as there's nowhere else to hold anything. There's no armrest, there's no space in the door pockets or the glove box, and you can't fit anything thicker than a Rizla in the seat back pockets.

You just have to remove cup / retract holder before getting out / in or your knee puts them out of action
in terms of functionality they are not Bmw design greatest achievement  they might not be "useless" but they aren't exactly user friendly if you compare with similar offering / similar year Porsche / Audi
Then the E89 came along & they moved the cupholders but made them equally unfit for purpose  :P

Never knew they even existed until wife borrowed my first Z... she loved them & with the adjusting bracket are IMO great for any size but a PITA when left out when getting in/out

They aren't very well-designed but I've had them in 2 of mine and found them really useful when I have made longer trips (like 3 or 4 hours). I can stop for a coffee and not have to sit in the services waiting for it to cool down enough to drink it, or stick a bottle in there during the summer.

Mind you I managed to buy a pair of Machine Monkey ones for my 1st Z4 and they were better in some ways because there was no risk of bashing them with your knee!

I seldom use cup holders in any vehicle. Most of mine hold things other than cups. On the Z my passenger side cup holder would self deploy when going over bumps on the road...which are typical on 90+% of the roads where I live.

Anyway I took it out, played around with it on the bench, put it back in the car and it hasn’t happened since. Don’t know what I did but whatever it was, it worked. I would not have been upset (probably wouldn’t have known that they were missing) if mine didn’t have them.

I only ever used mine on long trips, but found them to be very useful then. Held a small bottle of cherry coke very well.

I don’t get the obsession with cup holders. If I’m on a long journey and fancy a hot drink then I tend to want to stretch my legs and have a break. If it’s not a long journey then I can happily wait until I get where I’m going.

I can see how having a place to put small water bottles would be handy as they can be a bit tricky to find a home for but if you buy larger bottles then they can be securely wedged behind the seats.

It’s like your other half having big tits, if she doesn’t you’re always thinking your missing out

I've barely used mine, I think I open them more often to clean than actually store drinks. Nice to have tho, on those rare occasions I actually do use them

Get rid of them. They add weight to the car and slow you down and then there is the weight of the drink to take into account so its a no brainer. Also founf it a bit difficult to drink while thrashing around, illegal as well I think.

I’d consider myself in the ‘for’ camp when I comes to cup holders, though like many they’re rarely used but I’d rather have them there and rarely use them than not have the option.

With that said I did stumble across the flaw of cup holders in sports cars, namely that when you drive over a bump with a coffee (Costa, Starbucks or other) in the holder is does a fantastic splash out the top, this morning even reaching the instrument cluster. Perhaps splash guards are what we need.

I think they are a waste of time. You shouldn't drive and drink anything at the same time, you cannot be fully concentrating if trying to juggle hot coffee whilst trying to change gear etc. As beanie says, stop and get a drink. It's a ridiculous addiction from USA and Japan.Just my opinion, please feel free to spil hot coffee on yourself. :poke:

That’s nothing to do with whether you have cupholders or not, that’s simply being a s**t driver...and they’d be s**t and if it wasn’t cupholders it would just be a phone or something else.

I don’t have hot or fizzy drinks in the car...it’s just water in bottles...and I don’t take it out of the cupholder unless I’m at a steady speed on the motorway or dual-carriageway. My phone is also in my pocket from the moment I get in the car until I get out...if I get a call it will be answered on the hands-free...if it’s a text or notification it will be left until I stop.

I sense this is at risk of digressing from the merits (or lack of) having cup holders into driving safety. The two do not have to be mutually exclusive.

Maybe one day we’ll be able to have cup holders that only allow you to extract your beverage when it is safe to do so, though I doubt it will be BMW pioneering this with their cup holder track record.

Yes, it has gone a bit off track.

Even if all you use it for is to carry a drink to where you stop it's useful, because in a Z4 there is nowhere else to put it!

Apologies for earlier then for going off piste by talking about big Tits... :poke:

Although in France the Rozzers will fine you for any kind of eating or drinking at the wheel - tiz illegal in any form, despite what 99% of us do in the U.K.
