CSL Alloys - Bargain or Not?

Believe me, with the state of the roads in my area, I've hit countless potholes already, some of them really severe ... I am, of course, concerned about materials and quality, but BMW chose to ignore the spate of cracked wheels on the V8 M3 I previously owned, so don't feel that I'm taking any greater a risk than with OEM's. But, I wouldn't criticise anyone who feels inclined to go this route. To each his own :)

Ive got genuine csls on my Mr and i can testify they are the dogs danglies, i personally would not be able to sleep at night not knowing the quality of my wheels, especially as i use my at the track.

I dont get the big fuss over this wheel thing, its not like they are going to implode or something!
They could prove to be soft or have an average finish but many OEM wheels aren't great including BMW ones.

The ones above were £350 for 18" without tyres which is what most aftermarket wheels are anyway.
Over the years ive bought probably 20 sets, some of which were around £2k, others similar to above and never had any trouble.
yeah but i don't get the point when people buy a 40k car (ok he might of bought it 2nd hand, but still at least 22k) and then spend £350 on the wheels??

would you buy a house and then replace the windows with plastic??

there are good reps, but they are still around £800-£900.

Dear oh dear.

I really careth not a jot what anyone thinks about the fact that my wheels were indecently cheap. What does hack me off is the analogy of plastic windows. Sorry, but this is well wide of the mark.

1. The wheels I bought have been manufactured from the same basic raw materials as any other.
2. They have to be manufactured in the same basic way as any wheel, OEM or otherwise, AND they have to, by law, comply with minimum safety standards (CE anyone).

I agree that every one is entirely entitled to their opinion, however, lets base the opinions on fact, not conjecture or wild analogies that simply do not stack up.

Heres my opinion though, just because I spend a large amount of money buying a car does not mean that I have to buy accessories on the basis that I must by THE best available. I buy accessories that are fit for purpose. In a similar vein, I own a very expensive watch, but do you really think I have to replace the battery with a genuine replacement? Honestly, I don't understand that mentality. I won't criticise or put down anyone who does feel that way inclined - karma man :) , but please don't put forward a ridiculous analogy and expect me to not react adversely ....

my analogy was an exaggeration of what i meant... it's not like i'm actually assuming the rims are made of wood!

I don't think everything has to be OEM, but do you really think your going to get the same performance and build quality as an orignal CSL or upmarket rep for a fraction of the cost?

Are £200 Jeans better quality than £25 ones or are you paying for the name and possible exclusivity?

Oh and i work with furniture/cloth all day long.......

woow, the genuine items are lighter, stronger, properly tested. the reps who the hell knows what testing if any they gone through?? yup no problems buying a cheap pair of jean but then again a cheap pair of jeans isnt going to risk yours or your loved ones live/s if they f**k up!! ive seen so many reps with cracks, bends, fatigues, its just not worth it. if you ever seen how easily a good quality alloy bends , youd be as worried as i am about fitting the unknown. i.e Reps!

guys, im considering selling up and have some original CSLS shod with F1's in the largest sensible size :) would be looking for some original //M coupe wheels and cash?

PM me if your interested...

Thanks

I'm not decided either way on whether I would go replica or OEM...but as said, plenty of 'OEM' BMW alloys have problems with cracks, buckling, peeling lacquer and so forth. You cannot put all OEM wheels into the category 'quality' and all aftermarket wheels into the category 'crap' IMO....it's a case by case thing. Can you can post up a few examples of broken CSL replicas (whether £400 or £900)? I've seen for myself Z4M OEM wheels with major buckling on the balancing machine....BMW say it's common, same for RS4 alloys...

if you saw just how dangerous cheap replica wheels can be you would be shocked

20inch ac schnitzer reps on an e53 x5 hairline cracks on three of the four wheels on both the inner well and on the backs of the spokes

18" mv2 reps spokes snapped car ended up in the bodyshop for some seriously hefty repairs as the car hit a high kerb when it let go

18" csl reps on a 1 series all four wheels distorted with runout from side to side rather than the typical pothole damage internal runout

cost price of csl wheels for the stealers to buy them in is £1300 roughly

That used to be the case but they are upwards of £1700 now and that's if you can find a dealer willing to sell you a set.

BM AUTOSPORT supply a CSL style wheel in 18s with a staggered setup with the correct offsets and bore for the Z4. I contacted Mark at BM AUTOSPORT and he told me these are excellent quality and cannot be purchased anywhere else as they are supplied exclusively to him.

Apologies to the M boys for going slightly off topic as I should have said these wheels are for non M cars :)

Dav the wheel nut
