Cruise Control Retro-fit

Hi guys just been reading the threads regarding fitting the CC,i've had a look and my car is prewired the question is how does the CC switch attach to the steering column or does it attach to the lower steering cowling ??

There is a guide/slot in the steering column which the switch slides into :D

The cowl fits around it - either buy the kit with the space cut out or cut it out yourself...

the switch just slides in, pull the wiring harness a bit to get some slack.

once that is on then you can put the cowl back on and replace the screw. the switch is tight to get in but with a bot of care and a shove it goes in great.

just a tip. use a dremmel on the cowl, follow the marks but leave about 0.5-1mm inside the line for a better fit.

Has anybody attempted to install cruise control on a post 04 model? I know theres been lots of chat about it being more complicated, but has anyone actually done it successfully? If so, how much of a nightmare is it?

its easy, comes with the extra lead when you buy the kit. there is a thread here somewhere which lists the extra instructions.

Just ordered the switch £60 from the local stealer, will fit it next week when it turns up.

that's a good price!! from which one? i thought they're more like £150??

If anyone needs the instructions, I've got a pdf. This doesn't cover the 3.0Si with autobox/paddle shift and I can give advice on that if needed.

Getting it from Crossflags in Dumfries, It's just the switch on its own, the £150 includes a new lower cowl from what I understand.

Done it

They can be viewed here.

Ive also posted in the link in the How-To section....

Instructions here... although I'm quite surprised the link is still there as I haven't been with bulldog for quite sometime :o

Everyone who asks me I recommend the switch alone and 10 minutes with a dremmel to cut the cowling and save around £80 to £90.

Even worse is asking the dealer to fit it making a £60 15 minute project into a £300 job :)

i thought it was just for the switch as it would be silly to get the cowl. it's even got the outline of where you should cut it, so why would anyone bother getting another one??

The benefit of the cowel is that it makes the job a bit quicker and you can always reverse the job if you wanted to move the unit onto another car.

I bought the cowel because I didn't trust my Dremel skills

how do you neatly cut out the swtich?? Hummm...Dubious!

BMW have made it oh so easy by having the cutout line pre marked on the inside of the moulding (presumably so they can cast with or withour the cutout)
All you have to do is trace this slightly narrower and it's a perfect fit.

Of couse if you ever come to sell you can buy a new lower cowel for £20 of pick up one from a breakers.

BMW love to make money by calling things a 'kit'

have a spare cowel in a box if anyone wants it.

the other benefit of the 150 kit is that it comes with the extra wiring required on some cars, presumably the switch only doesnt ?

If you need the cable it's a separate part number and costs just a few £'s, so not an important factor.

Bought the switch, cut out the cowling, tested the switch all works, easiest mod going.

Just one thought though, The switch was £60ish, even with the cowling it's £150ish, anyone got any idea how much it cost to get fitted as a factory option on an 04 car, I know it wasn't £60.

I wanted to retro fit this option but my local stealer said over £500! Well, they are living up to their name of stealer

Anyone know if I DIY install this will I void my BMW warrenty or have to inform insurer as "mod"?

over £500!!!

find yourself another one... mine quoted £300 - I thought that was bad!

Yours will be slightly more complicated because the wiring wont be present but that's taking the pi$$.

Ive not informed my insurance - as it looks OEM...
