Cruise Control LED retrofit

Hi everyone,

TL;DR - how can I code/program the cluster, so the cruise control led would work correctly?

I wanted to convert speed scale from MPH to KMH. So, I sourced x3 e83 dash, as all junk yards have MPH clusters for Z4, and the dealer was out of my price range. Conversion was pretty straightforward - only slight modification was needed (ring with scale had to be cut down to fit). Besides small difference in graphics on the gauge faces the other difference is cut-out for cruise control light. After comparing PCBs between two clusters, I found that only two LEDs and three resistors were missing. After transferring those parts from donor, to my dash and testing the cluster with integrated test (option 2 on dash test menu) it does light up. Problem with it is that now it always lights up after second or two after turning on the ignition (corresponds to some relay clicking). Now I can go back and remove the LEDs and be done with it, but maybe there is someone who has done this before and knows a simple fix?

Bit of a non starter really. It looks like the X3 gets the I/O steering wheel button which, assuming it's the same as my E46, controls the armed state of the cruise which is indicated by the LED. The E85 cruise is permanently active which is presumably why the LED comes on and stays on.

I suppose that the arming functionality is present in the E85. Whether an appropriate signal can be generated by adjusting the resistors in the cruise switch so that one of the cancel directions or the resume switch can become I/O, I have no idea.

I presume you assumed that the cruise cluster light indicates that cruise is engaged?

Thanks. You're most likely right.
Relay click is probably DME/MSV70 starting and then activating the Cruise Control.

I assumed that led is for when CC is engaged, not only "armed".

I've done similar things before - think "ooh, this is a clever idea" only to find my assumptions were off. Hey ho, so is life!
