Critical safety recall

‘Blake’ at Vines who booked me in... didn’t know part availability. I had to ask and prompt him about whether the car was safe to drive or whether I should be.

Given the extensive info about ‘see how it feels’ then I shall keep an eye on it. I can’t say I’d noticed anything untoward of late but I’ve only driven it home from the dealers after the software update debacle and it hasn’t been anywhere since.

I hadn't noticed or felt anything different either, and I've been using daily. Better safe than sorry I guess.

Surely they can't just keep your car and say you can't have it back until it's fixed. Even more frustrating when they don't even have the parts available and can't supply you atleast a like for like car. They are giving you a completely different car to a Z4 with less power. I'd say keep nagging away at them and keep complaining, you might even get something better!

It just seems wrong that someone can suddenly turn around and say you can't have your car back, regardless of the nature of the recall. It's your personal property so you have the freedom to do whatever you like with it. Obviously common sense plays a part too, if it's a threat to life, then you should atleast be able to get it recovered back to your home...

Just seems wrong to be refused of your own belongings...

But, as devil's advocate:
If they gave it back to you, then something failed and you wrapped it round a tree, you'd pretty soon want to know what they were doing, giving you back a car that they knew could possibly have a dangerous failure.

Exactly, and now knowing there is a potential serious issue with the car, I would rather it sit at the dealers until it is repaired.

So speaking to a very helpful guy, Lewis, from a local dealership he hadn’t heard of any recall so was interested to hear the QE code and then when found it is on their system as a recall as of the 26th June
He read to me what it said;

“steering track rods may break due to increased vibration due to excess temperatures, replace both and carry out steering alignment”

He went on to say under the safety aspect it states;

“Steering rods have been shown to break when tested under circumstances of recall. If a break occurs this would result in catastrophic loss of complete vehicle control”

The joke is when he then said that the earliest they could replace would be the 26th July or the 28th if I wanted a hire car 😂🤔

Was this Vines as well? Don’t tell me it was Barons and someone was both courteous and helpful?

I’ve got sight of two PDF’s from another forums but can’t work out out how to attach them so just took screenshots...

TL/DR Version

Affects a few vehicles. G29’s manufactured between Nov ‘18 and March ‘19 inclusive
BMW NA recons you can drive them if no vibration is occurring through steering wheel - Altho it’s probably a bit dodgy considering they may fail.

Yeah I completely understand what you're saying. But, lets just say, for example, you objected the dealer to keep your car, and instead you got a trailer to pick the car up and deliver it back to your home garage. Surely they cannot stop you from taking your own car back. Ofcourse they will state they will not accept liability due to a current recall...

My point is they cannot just say you can't have your car back until they repair it. It's the customers car and they should decide.

The wonders of technology huh! When we would be privy to this type of information without the use of the internet.
Thanks for this and for sharing.

I know they have to contact owners of various models, which takes time but it shows that BMW wont contact owners until August of this year and whilst I appreciate the risk of one of these track rods breaking is low... it still shows as being urgent. I’m surprised there’s such a gap between them knowing and notifying owners.

I can only guess the delay may be because they don't have the parts!

I got a recall notice in the post for my E91 a couple of years ago for the heater fan resistor that had the potential to catch fire but when I called Sytner they wouldn't book it as they had no parts. :roll:

A tale from the past !!
A few years ago BMW had an issue with the rear suspension units on one particular model of their R1200 motorcycle. A notice went out to inform owners to stop riding their motorcycles immediately and await further details, over the next few days / weeks BMW registered hundreds of R1200GS models ( different suspension units ) and free issued them to owners with the affected units. This included delivery of the replacement bike and collection of the affected bike where ever it was, for one of my mates this included being in the middle of France on a touring holiday. The dealers were then storing the bikes until the repairs were carried out, it took months to sort out and then BMW sold the replacement GS models off through the dealerships.

Copied this from Bimmerpost:-
So,
Has anyone heard from BMW RE; a critical safety recall!?

I understand it affects the track rod ends of some sort. Over on another forums there’s a few cars affected, mostly the M40i it seems and one member has posted
Quote:
On the vehicle inspection report it states, QE 10032140300 it needs AT track rod repair kit reference QE sheet, which is marked in red as urgent, the highest category.
Heading to the BMW Recall Info page and entering my VIN I get this;

Rumours say there are no parts in the UK for this as yet and being a critical safety recall BMW will not return your vehicle to you if you drop it in for investigation/repair even if they don’t have the parts available.

Yes, there's a thread here
https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=122941

With high level safety recalls the absence of a fix is not an excuse, legally for the manufacturer, not to instruct people to cease using the product..

Has anyone checked the DVSA website to see if its listed there yet?

Outstanding vehicle recalls
Check if BMW Z4 XXXXXX has outstanding recalls

Outstanding recall found
This vehicle has been recalled since at least 2 July 2020.
Contact a BMW dealership to arrange for repairs.
If you've had the recalled component repaired recently, it can take up to 3 weeks for the manufacturer to update their records.
This information is provided by the vehicle manufacturer. If you think the information is wrong, contact the vehicle manufacturer's dealership. Please do not contact the DVSA, as we are not able to change the recall status.

Yeah, Swiftly put this out on a thread at end June.

Appears strange how some 2019 cars are affected and others aren't.....guess it's down to build date,and therefore that would point at BMW having changed the offending parts already,but kept it quite until now. Appears to be mainly,but not always ,the m40i ,some 20i too though.

Hopefully affected cars get fixed sooner rather than later.
