My previous car, a Seat Ibiza, wasn't homologated for a towbar despite (engine/springs/dampers aside) being identical to bog-standard Ibizas. I bought the correct detachable towbar and fitted it myself for bike rack purposes. Its seems that you're right. But I have just found this which could be a great option. I dont know enough about Z4's yet to see any complications though...
