coupe or roadster?

When the US Magazine Road & Track tested the coupe they got consistent 4.2 sec 0-60... The 5.0sec from BMW is very conservative.

Road and Track got 4.6sec~4.7sec for the M-roadster. I'll have to look up my magazine to confirm. But either way, the quickest time published by any car magazine up until now is 4.6sec for the M-roadster.

Arguing over fractions of a second is all pretty pointless...unless you are playing top trumps.
Both cars will do 0-60 in about 5, both are quick and both sound great. Its quicker than an E46 M3 (used to have one) and more communicative to drive as well. If you want a Roadster, buy the Roadster. If you want a Coupe, buy the Coupe. They are both plenty quick enough. Top end speed the Coupe will be faster (Aerodynamics of the roof vs a soft top) but it will be marginal and irrelevant as that'll be above 150MPH.

Coupe with a targa modification...best of both worlds. Does anyone know if this can be done? Glass roof with clips for a sunny day (or something like this). A mod like this, done properly, would definitely convince me to switch to the coupe
Well... me personally... I just fell in love with the lines of the QP the first time I saw it... that ass... just gorgeous.
My dad had the pre-facelift Z4 3.0i, but a manual, still with the CDV, and a roadster of course (pre-facelift, weren't you paying attention?). Nice car, very pretty with the top down, a joy to drive once you got past 1st gear and all that... but with the top up... nah... not the drop-dead-gorgeous experience I got from the QP.
And that's where the E89 comes in... If you just take the looks into account, it looks like a roadster when the top's down, it looks decent with the top up, a lot better than the E85 with either soft- or hard-top, but still it just only looks decent with the top up... nowhere near as pretty as my beloved E86... a future classic...
This is why I bought the E86. If I want the open-air experience I'll take my bike (that's a pedal-bike, bicycle, whatever...). The arenaline rush I got from driving a motor-bike, I also get from driving this car.

I agree with Road Trip...driving experience comes first.
I drove my M round France last year (the pic in my sig was outside Millau looking on to the bridge), somehow I know this experience wouldn't have been as good if i was in the coupe. Can't beat the sound with the top down! (i'm a poet and i didn't know it) Especially driving through long tunnels in Europe

I'm not coupe bashing here; I agree that the coupe is better looking, it's a classic shape (reminds me of Ferarri GTO shapewise), and I bet its a hoot to drive, but i couldn't sacrifice the open top. My personal preference.

Considering I mainly use my motorbike for days out in the summer, I only need a car when the weather looks bad, so the Coupe fits the bill (as the motorbike and Z4 are only for pleasure purposes, I have a hack for daily use).
No car gives the same experience as you get riding a motorbike!

after 5 years ownership of z3m roadster, i felt i needed a change from the sunburnt head, the never quite comfortable temperature with the top down and worst of all the bumpy road induced scuttle shake, not saying i didnt love that car but went for the z4m coupe this time, really think you would struggle to notice difference in performance between roadster or coupe in either z3 or z4m 's, whichever you go for , you will have a blast, ! enjoy.
