Coupe or convertible

I've been looking hard at the z4 for a long time. I'm just waiting for the right one. Then an 06 coupe for a STEAL showed up in mint condition, 3.0 and 6speed. Fully loaded with every option. A real cream puff. But I'm worried if I go with the coupe I'll regret not having gotten the convertible. I've never owned a convertible,, though, but the look of it is amazing, with the coupe not taking my breath away quite as much.

Can anyone provide some insight on this?

Welcome, this has been discussed many times and everyones opinion
will differ, you need to drive both and see whats right for you :)

Insight into what exactly?

Personally I think the coupé is the better looking car. It's stiffer so will handle better, but then the convertible obviously has the advantage of being topless for sunny days.

The decision is purely a subjective one. That you've posted a question asking whether you'll regret a coupé, tells you everything you need to know.

If you prefer the roadster, then go for the roadster....simple dilemma

Oh and welcome to the forum./

Oh god I can see the coupe vs convertible argument kicking off again lol... wait for it...

As said above, everyone thinks differently, try both and decide, its the best way.

Welcome to the forum nasomi. I have the roadster but you will be happy with either model. They are both great looking cars

I even searched and didn't see any comparrison.

Insight as far as pro's and cons of either. Stiffness is definitely a pro, insulation in the long winters, too. I've heard that convertibles are much colder in the winter months due to having nothing more than a piece of cloth between you and the snow/ice/rain.

At least 6 months, typically 9 months out of the year the temperature doesn't permit riding with the top down, and 3 of those warm months typically there's a fair amount of rain.

I have had many carts with sunroofs and never, ever used them, but I imagine the convertible will have a much different feel.

I read you can put a set of golf clubs in the convertible with the top up, what about the coupe? bigger boot?

I've had both.
I prefer the looks of the coupe by far but the roadster has its benefit of topless on nice days in the summer....problem is they are too few

overall I prefer the coupé as its usually bad weather in england anyway so its pointless having a soft top (thats how I felt when I had my roadster)

I was going to post that you seemed to have decided on the roadster, but my suggestion was depends upon where you are in the US and the climate.

If you won't use a roadster because of the weather, then the coupe may be for you, although forget about stiffness - the Z4 was designed as a roadster and the roof (on UK for certain) is a 3 layer insulated roof , so never cold. Even with our weather most of us have the roof down whenever possible.

Don't forget there are factory hardtops available too.

I have a roadster and love it. The roof goes down in almost any temperature as long as there's nothing falling out the sky. Though IMO you need heated seats and a wind deflector to make it comfortable. And as CJ says, the roof is well insulated, and the car has heaters... Roof motor is a risk, yes, but worth taking. As for stiffness, I am not an engineer but I'd put money on that not being an issue unless you're going to track the car in a serious way - the difference is minimal and t was designed as a roadster from the outset.

As said, drive em both and see which you prefer. Then buy the roadster

That's good to hear about the roof being insulated like that. I'm in the north east and while our summers get into the mid 90's, it's generally not for very long, and there is a decent amount of rain and cool days. Last year my wife and I went on a dinner cruise on 24 July, and it was drizzling and 68F. If I were to get the roadster the top would be down maybe 20-30 days a year.

I'd love to try them out, but unfortunately anything more than a year or two old will not be seen on a dealer lot, so private sellers is hte only way to go. I'd feel bad taking my test drives in someone elses car. I did see the hardtop convertible on the 2013's, and those are nice, but more than I'm looking to spend.

I do hear a lot about roof motors dying but that doesn't bother me to much, I'm fairly handy.

I decided on the roadster because that's all there was in what I was looking to spend with the options I was looking for. Now a coupe enters, and I'm torn.

I've also owned both - I'd say if you haven't owned a convertible before then buy one - everyone should own one at least once in their life.

From a practical point I love the coupe - I can get loads in the hatch area if needed (surprising), it is quieter than the roadster ( when the foot isn't planted in the loud pedal) and most of all I don't miss the visual restriction of the wide rear pillar on the roadster when the roof is up - which as folks have said in uk is most of the time!!

I had my roadster as a daily driver when I lived in Scotland - sun, wind, rain and lots of snow in the winter - it coped fine and was cozy inside when needed

... Solution - buy one of each!

Personally i prefer the looks of the coupe from certain angles... The roadster with the roof up certainly doesnt look as good. But roof down it looks much better.

The coupe has a bigger boot too. Plus the addition of being safer and probably a lower insurance liability(read lower costs)

However the roadster is quiet, and warm, and can put the roof down... Which imo out weights any benefits of the coupe.

Well, they didnt make many coupes as there was no demand for them. The coupe owners will claim that this makes them more exclusive, but in reality, nobody wanted the tin tops :stir: :poke: :fuelfire:

I would go for the roadster - a purpose built two seater sports car. If you're worried about the cold winter, get a hardtop (as I did)

So on the coupe in the hatch you have more space in the back. Enough for, say, 2 bags of golf clubs?? :D :D

Also I can't seem to figure out what year/package includes steering wheel controls. Seems like only 03's and a couple 04's are missing them. That's a vital thing to me as well. It may sound petty and dumb, but I've grown extremely fond of htem in my truck, and when driving my wife's car or my other car, it really bothers me to be missing them. It's like "i gotta reach all the way over WHERE to change the station or adjust hte volume?? That's insanity."

Too wet, too cold or too hot :)

Mate went to Margate Sunday, top down. Looked like a smoked kipper the following day.

Get the better looking coupe.
:poke:

The Z4 was designed, from the ground up, as a roadster. There are relatively few such cars on this fine planet.

It is my first roadster and I can thoroughly recommend not having a roof. Unless it's hissing down then the roof of the Zed is always in the down position, when I'm driving it. 8) Even at One in the morning, on a clear night in February. What an amazing way to view the heavens. :D

Just remember to keep half an eye on the road too. :driving:
