Coupe or convertible

After thinking about it more, I'm actually leaning towards hte coupe now. I used to race auto cross as well as dirt tracks, I'm a racecar driver at heart and always loved go-fast machines. While I love the look of the roadster, I'm also growing to love the look of the coupe, perhaps even more.

This was why I went for the coupé.

Firstly I preferred the look of the coupé, I love the roadster top down, but am not a fan of its lines with the roof up. But I think the coupé is a beautiful looking car and the lines just work from every angle (imo of course).

I don't know about non M version, but as I understand due to the coupé's extra rigidity (35,000NM rather than 14,500NM of the roadster) the M division were able to make the suspension more aggressive and the steering rack more immediate effectively meaning the coupé handles better than the roadster. But like I said I'm not sure if this is relevant for the non-M Z4's.

The coupé is a rarer car so you will have that element of exclusivity with it also.

However, as others have said it all depends what you want the car for. If you are a racecar driver at heart I'd imagine the coupé is more suited to your desires,

I am not sure I see what the problem is ?
You want a car you can drive with the roof off = roadster.
You don't want a car you can drive with the roof off = coupe.

In the words of a famous meerkat, "simples".

I think it can be hard choice, and a very expensive one to get wrong.

I've had 2 roadsters, currently running an MR and I love it. I do have the hardtop but who needs that...... I live in sunny Blackpool!!

My other zed was a 2.5 sport auto, and that was run in all weathers l. I quite enjoy the roof down on a fresh winters morning.

I'd recommend a convertible - there is something wonderful about driving with the roof down and if you like it you'll have the roof down everyday even in poor weather. Only heavy rain stops me having the roof down. The modern Zeds give you both options of course as does the SLK - whoops different thing altogether! Get the heater on - heated seats brilliant, a wind deflector, hat and big collar on your coat and you're set for anything.

If you've not had a convertible and are not too bothered what others think then go for it - its a new lease of motoring life!

Yeah the roady is nice, though yeah it much depends own the weather. While living in Christchurch (unzed) we hardly ever had the roof down, crept in summer.. But boy it was nice when it was down. Loved that!!!

On the other hand ill pipe in for ...

"coupe! coupe! coupe!!!"
:fuelfire:

I've never been a fan of soft tops..didn't get the fascination at all. I bought the ZR on a whim last year...couldn't afford the coupe at the time. But now I wouldn't be without a convertible! I love it, its no different to having a hard top car in winter IMO, and I get the roof down whenever I can! I don't hear anyone commenting or looking any more than when I'm in the JCW (but then again I'm too busy enjoying driving to notice!). I'm a total convertible convert!

Maybe get the folding hardtop. So so glad I got one.Its been two and more cars in one
with the options like adaptive suspension, roof and DCT gearbox.

With the top down I get a better feeling of speed.
If it was on a track id have the coupe all day but its not.
The coupe does look slightly better.

I maybe wrong but it appears more roadster owners regularly 'track' their cars than coupe owners? for you non 'trackers' what is the big deal if the roadster is lighter or the Coupe more rigid - Unless your street racing with the chav brigade?

I don't get the 'I feel in capsulated when I am in the coupe' comment - surely its the same with the roadsters roof closed, or hardtop on? I mean the cars are near identical once your inside? unless we have got anal enough to count the different in console buttons or the slightly less curve of the windscreen for the coupe owners?

M or non Roadster/Coupe owners who sing the praises of their Z but sell within the first 12 months of ownership - I'll hold out judgement on their opinions

Apart from the above waffle - how can you debate the two models in this glorious weather :driving:

Now if it was a cooler, weather day and I had no European road trips planned then I would choose the.....Coupe, but only the M.

It get my vote purely for its looks, not for its rigidity, we know your all talking tosh on that one... Just for that backend would have my call

What I really wanted was a bmw version of hte SLK, which they have now, finally. I wanted the slk for a LONG time, but it wasn't practical. Now I'd like the z4 in a hardtop convertible but they're a bit out of my price range.

One other thing I should ask, and this will probably be more for the NA folks. Is the nav system any good? Updated maps?

And how easy is hte opperation? Can it sync to my iphone and play my music relatively well? I had that on a ford rental a few months ago and got really used to it, even though I only drove it for a week. If it's a feature that works well and works with steering wheel controls I think it's a feature that I'll add to my list.
