Convince me to upgrade from 3.0i to the M!

///M is an investment and you will also need to factor in the consumables, fuel, parts, servicing, insurance will all be more than your 3.0.

Don't want to be a kill joy but it's not something to enter into lightly.

Insurance might actually be cheaper. A lot of us in the UK have found this when upgrading. Mine dropped by 20% when I upgraded from a 2.5si

There will always be something a bit quicker. There will always be a law of diminishing returns. I feel the use of borrowed money for something so utterly pointless as half a second off a thirty to sixty overtaking move is bonkers.

The two litre throws well. I chose that and have never regretted not traipsing around with a big lump stuck in the nose. I have the big lump in my 530i and it is okay but unsophisticated in its loudness. Give me silence everytime.

I mean it's not too shabby owning any Z as a med student
So my advice would be enjoy your current Z , don't waste money on a car loan , spend more time with your books and on the wards and get the best grades you can to become an excellent doctor.
In any event as many doctors in the US can earn obscene amounts of cash ,you'll be able to buy any exotic car you want in a few years ,even though you'll have little time to drive it .
Waste your money???? Bonkers! :poke:

ya no what OP..... life is VERY short, it can be taken from us at anytime.... theirs nothing wrong with taking risks sometimes as long as its a measured one... YOLO. Go get your ///M and have a blast, life to short NOT to,

Nah, get what you're saying Fin... Though the decision is never all head, and (for me) it's about so much more than half a second. That said, as a student would I have beggared myself for a car ? Nope, and I'd have been delighted to be able to own a 3.0... Or any Z for that matter. Though they didn't exist when I was that young :D

You don't remember the Z1 then. I remember being 16/17 and seeing one in a Vauxhall dealer or all places. Lovely car I thought at the time, and still do.

As beedub said you never know what's round the corner, if you can afford it go for it.

I know I would love am MC. Even with the asymmetric boot. It probably matters where you live too. I am surrounded by single carriageway twisty lanes. Horses for courses. Anyway. If the OP wants some unbridled M Love, he has come to the right place

I don't know if it is an option for the OP but in the UK at least an E46 M3 is much cheaper than an equivalent Z4 M and has many of the same qualities... if it is of interest.

Also, if it is an only or main car then it is much less compromised than the M.

Again I don't know the market in the US but i would also recommend trying a 996 911 for a point of comparison. Ignore the issues with them, a high mileage one will likely be fine. The Zed is more practical though if you need boot over rear seats.

Like with most things, if you need other people to convince you, you're probably doing the wrong thing!

That said, life is very short so you should make the most of it. If you're taking out a loan though is it really worth it?

At the end of the day your circumstances are your own and you know them better than anyone else. If it was me and I had the cash ready I would, but I certainly wouldn't take a loan.

I went from a 3.0 coupe to an MC and have never regreted it one bit. In fact I regret not getting one sooner!

It's funny the amount of comments and funny looks I got when people saw my new car. Thinking I just bought a different coloured Z4 coupe. But they don't know the magic that lies underneath 8)

I've had both (well a 3.0 in 2004 and an M today) and the M is a much better car. However, as you're a med student and finances might not be so great, then I'd say wait until you're earning. Given your age I'd spend the money going to bars and picking up girls!

I've massively over stretched on cars in the past, and on reflection is totally pointless as you don't enjoy it as you really should....always worrying if something goes wrong. When I bought my CSL years ago I got 2 punctures in the first week....£700 later (yes, the only place I could get them from were charging £350 each) and the rest of the month I was living in broke city....not a good look!

Ahh that makes more sense, tbh I could only echo what other people have said.

Only upgrade if your heart is set on it, you shouldn't need convincing.

He's in the states - 9,000 dollars sounds about right.

Seriously though, OP, if you're thinking about taking a loan just to cover the cost of buying the car I wouldn't do it. The regular car is still awesome and an M costs a lot more than just the purchase price

Wow this thread blew up. Thanks for all the differing opinions. After more thought, I have decided since I really can't afford it, I'm not going to. I love my z and there's always a yearning for more, but you guys are right in that a z4mc might/should be out of my league right now.

One day...
