I just re-read the thread from the start and it's a very theoretical concept to date, beginning when the OP bought an Automatic 3.0Si Coupe because an SMG M3 was out of budget.
Perhaps a good starting point would be to get a ride in any S54 engined car, or better still have a drive in an SMG M3 to at least be sure he liked the S54!
I love it but inexplicably some don't, and if the OP fell into that category the whole idea becomes academic.
Personally I'd make a compromise somewhere! If I was desperate for an Auto E86 I'd have what the OP has - it's not like a 3.0Si is slow! But if I was desperate to have an S54 with an Auto I'd get an SMG M3. If my priority was Auto with M performance I'd get an E89 35is, or possibly an E91 DCT M3.
I realise it's great to think what combination of BMW bits you'd like in your car but one-off projects like that seem to usually end up being money-pits, especially if you aren't doing any of the work yourself!
Anyway I'm off to look for a Z8 Coupe with an S85 V10 and manual gearbox.
