My OH has no concept of what things like tyres cost and I’m fly enough not to tell her

She’s used to paying for tyres for a cooking model Golf so all I say is the Zed needs new tyres and she just says “that’s fine” not once has she asked the cost :evil:

Bent a front wheel at the weekend…today turns out rear is bent too..got a pair of 235/35 19s in case front is damaged…may have to get some rears soon..enjoy the ride

So the good people at STS Tyre Pros in Huntingdon have fitted new Continental Sport Contact 7 on each corner, plus we’ve put the best of the old Bridgestone RFT on a repaired, spare, welded alloy I had in the garage (just in case). It’s also had its alignment done as it was “all over the place” according to the very expensive looking machine.

Silly, but I’m looking forward to the drive home. And now it’s been up in the air, I’m thinking next year we may look at new dampers all round. Am I thinking Bilstein is the way to go? I guess I need to look up a different thread for that…

Oh, and the staff here reckon it’s the “shiniest car we have ever seen”. Nice.

I had the same with my first set of aftermarket wheels. They were only on for 6 months before picking up several flat spots.

That was the primary driving force behind my move to some forged BMW wheels. I've had them a few years now and they've been trouble-free. Much less to worry about when you hit a pothole.

That’s not good, Don’t Apex offer a lifetime warranty on this sort of thing? I thought it was one of the USP’s that went someway to justifying their price?

‘Night and day’ they said… well, first impression is that the removal of RFTs does make a difference to the ride. It’s like running on much deeper profiles. Sorry Pondrew but on this occasion the Forum wins and it’s definitely an improvement. However, I guess it’s easy to accept the harsh ride as part of the gift from BMW on the M-Sport setup.

As for the Contis, clearly they need to bed in before I push them harder, but the feeling I’m getting is they are going to be great.

They offer a discounted price on a replacement…with the NC500 next week time was not on my side to explore that route..10-14 working day turnaround..all fixed courtesy of the wheel doctor..

Yes makes me think…in addition to pot holes the wheel doctor says the single biggest issue is going over raised speed humps driving so the wheels are either side..apparently massive load on inside edges resulting in bending…may take the other two to get them checked…I’ve done that more than a few times..

Bilstein B6s or B8s..great improvement in handling

Well - probably only a great improvement in handling IF your current shocks are worn out.

TBH changing from worn out shocks to almost anything new will be a pretty decent change.

I found that at 30k miles my 2012 20i in 2018 had a significant improvement in handling in many aspects with the application of B8s on stock MSport springs….others experiences may vary

My experience is mixed - On my first z4 e85 (a 2007 car with maybe 30k miles & 4 years old) - I changed from the stock non adjustable shocks to some bilstein kit & it was better for sure... so a good change.

But on my porsche that had been diagnosed with having failed front shocks / shock mounts that had been in for maybe 8 years & 50k miles, changing the shocks just felt the same. Waste of money - the noise was something else entirely in the end.

Go figure.

I think it’s generally accepted on E85s and E89s that the OE spec and quality weren’t great..maybe the chassis just asks more of and shows the deficits of the shocks…

On the 20i they were going and the B8s transformed the chassis performance in every way…at the expense of a little more jiggle over low speed small ripples..the 35is the shocks were certainly gone…bottoming out and wallowing like a whale…again new Ohlins transformed the ride and handling…unfortunately still leaving it wanting..but that’s a seperate story..
