Compact 4x4

I'm looking at getting my daughter a compact 4x4 ie X1 / Rav 4/ Q3 etc., a recent version.

Has anybody got any experience or opinions of them?

I had a VW Tiguan for a couple of years - TD140 in SE trim. Great car, would certainly have another, but would probably go for a sport trim next. Quite poky in real world driving and high 40's fuel consumption on a run. Nothing went wrong and had decent residuals at trade in time. I'd had a late Mk1 Freelander prior to that and the difference in driving experience (and reliability) was like night and day.

Yeah the Mk1 Freelander was a right donut. If she wants a proper offroader then the FL2 is a much better bet (even was a 3.2 petrol briefly available) and has LR's world class offroad capability. Got a much better interior than the FL1 too. I'm a LR fan though .... otherwise, I guess this depends on the usual combo of budget, functions and style.

We had a ford kuga (witch I am informed by my Icelandic friend means poo in his native tongue) the car was anything but. My sister in law has the Kia also seems a good car.

@ronk, you might want to post this on the d3 forum too, plenty of views on there ...

I had a freelander 2 and thoroughly rated it. Much better than the first one and more like a mini Range Rover. Did a little muddy driving and the 4x4 system worked perfectly, economical at 40-45mpg and totally reliable.

I've also had a Suzuki Grand Vitara but would not really recommend the 1.6 petrol version as its too slow and very heavy on fuel.

I looked at the X1 and Rav4 today.
The Toyota showroom seemed very second division compared to bmw's it didn't make me feel that the buying experience would be as good.

Ron, my best mate had a Tiguan and they've a little baby girl (so you need to pack for the end of the world no matter where you go) and its suited them well in terms of comfort, reliability and space. Couple of guys also bought them for their wife's. The other choice would be the freelander 2 as mentioned and you know land rovers so I'm sure it would also be a good choice. I did look at an X1 once upon a time and i'd consider that over a RAV4, just not as nice a place to be as the others.

The Kia sportage is highly rated and gets good feedback, my aunty had one before my uncle chopped it in for a Evoque (which he drives more than her) and I have to say it was very comfy and a great ride. Lots of room and she never had any issues with it.

Have to say (slightly OT, ahem) that my buying experience at Stratstone's in Chesterfield for my Z4 was second to none. Very good. Have also had new 330D and 535i over the last xxx years, always good. Service - well that's something else. Sytner the pits.

Never bought a Toyota.

My old man has the Sportage and it is really nice.
The wife and I looked at Tiguan a couple of years ago, loved it and nearly bought one, but went with the Q5 in the end as we got a fully specced special edition for a good price.

I looked at a Tiguan today and was impressed!
It had the self parking system which appealed to my daughter - trouble is my wife started on about " I would like that"

The mid range tig had a shed load of toys and seenmed better than the x1
