Cold temps are already having an MPG impact...

My GF still isn't interested in this phenomenon, I notice, despite me taking the care to explain it to her whenever it gets cold.

My MPG went down a bit in Kent on Sunday, great to know I can blame the weather for this

Just drove up to Manchester today. 230 miles and at half a tank.

lol... with the greatest respect I can see this thread turning into the usual 'look how many miles I get'... it wasn't meant to be, it was more a 'its getting cold and my car is using more juice' :)

Sorry didn't mean to start anything. For me not stopping at the start of the M6 is a first! On the way up I was working out that when I was 18 my tuned 1 litre mini was only doing 24mpg! Whilst the Z4 being 3.0 was doing in the 30's.

Surely once the car is up to temp the cold air being denser should mean better economy?

Ah don't apologise, you just see so many 'look how many miles i get' threads is all... and yes you're right the colder the air the better once the engines are up to temp. The issue is the cold engine of course.. if only BMW supplied engine heaters for the Z! :D

If I was doing under 5 miles every day on a larger engine I'd definitely fit an engine pre-heater. They can go on a timer and will save fuel, engine wear and reduce the risk of mayo-gunk forming in the breather which is common on BMWs. There's lots of different makes, maybe some of our cold climate friends have experience? they are a factory option in some markets.

Not sure about engine heaters (fuel burning) I see the fuel consumption go bonkers during cold weather in my disco 3.

I'm noticing a serious drop in my economy...

I usually do 120-150 miles a week and that uses half a tank. I used to get 400 miles out of a tank (just under £70) in August/September with it dropping slowly to 300 miles. I think its dropping even more with the weather and bloody stopping and starting all the time with the ridiculous Manchester traffic :headbang:

At least fuel prices are quite reasonable right now.

must be nearly panto season so...."oh no they're not" still a bloody rip off even if prices have come down a bit.
back on topic, i'm desperately trying to get distaff to do the school run with the zed instead of the evoque (2.2 diesel with a very expensive dpf) as it's under a mile each way and it's currently doing 17 to the gallon

I don't really care about MPG it's been pissing down today in manchester and I've been out in the Z most of the day ! With A smile on my face and the gurgle of the 2.5 (6 cyl) soundtrack to keep me company !!
If you don't like the MPG get a moped !!! Ha ha

I should imagine long trips aren't really affected. As we all know its short/cold trips because the temp drop means even longer for the engine to warm up in slow traffic or short runs.

That's the reason a fuel burning heater can be a double edged sword!
ie a short journey you have an enriched mixture plus an engine heater burning fuel to add to add to the misery.

Some years ago there was a heater that plugged into mains electricity - do they exist anymore I wonder?

Missing the point of the thread again :headbang:

I've got a 30i auto and mine is 30.2mpg. I usually do around 5 miles a day in traffic! I've not noticed a real drop in mpg due to temperature yet.

Interesting. Do me a favour, reset your average MPG tomorrow morning before you set off, do the trip of 5 miles there and 5 miles back and let us know what it says then?

Well, I did the reset and no problems here, same mpg as usual (well 0.5 less than usual but a moot point given the small distance it was measured over). Was pretty chilly this morning, about 6degs, low average speed etc due to being stuck in queues.

Good result. That average speed is fairly good which would explain the consumption figure. I think my average speed is way lower and hence the worse mileage, made worse by the cold temps. Not forgetting the rather hungry twin turbos.

Yes and not how the gearing works on the more powerful cars but on mine it changes gear at very low revs, usually about 1700 rpm which is good for economy. I'm going to keep an eye over the longer term to see what the average is over say 2 months as the previous fig of 30.3 was for the previous 10k miles or so.

My mpg has dropped due to less gripp from the tyres giving more slip sliding funs!!

Mine is the third car in the family so it barely mores other than for fun drives, so I am more tham ok with 27-30 mpg
