Sport settings are still available on non adaptive cars.
If you’re not sure then you need to ask someone to check the shocks

Thanks. Confirms what I found online. Think I'll ask someone to pop it up on the ramp and say for sure.

I wonder if there's somewhere online where I can enter my reg or VIN and get confirmation...

If you look through the Front wheel, if you can see a lug on the damper, just above the brake disc, then you have adaptive suspension

You should also be able to see a similar lug on the rear looking underneath the back behind the rear wheel.

He’s had a Vanos check..therefore it’s not a N54 or N20 therefore it’s not adaptive

👍 I didn’t realise it was only an option on N54 and N20’s

I managed to get some sense from the VIN decoder website and yes, my engine is an N52k.

Apparently I have an S704 M Sports suspension. I was wondering whether I should be asking the garage to install OEM parts in order to maintain the suspension as it is or whether there are options from other manufacturers that are as good or, heaven forbid, even better.

My only thought was that I might then be obliged to tell my insurer. This isn't a big deal, more just hassle. It certainly wouldn't be an upgrade, but my understanding is that any deviation from standard spec means that in theory they should be informed. Just thinking about the dreaded loss adjuster if the worst happened.

Supplex springs are OE quality and a lot cheaper..its not a mod in that case so no insurance notification required

Any top tips for shocks if I end up doing them too?

As stated Bilstein are the best low cost option for an e89..

If it’s an MSport you’ll need Bilstein B8s

That’s Incorrect.

Adaptive suspension was definitely an option on the N52 3.0 because I had one fitted with it.

Looking at the price list, options for the 2010 Z4, adaptive suspension was an option.

My apology ..first N52 I’ve ever heard of having it fitted..he has the normal MSport version anyway ..
