Closing the roof using key fob

Plus, with comfort access you also get a comfort loading function with which you open the roof only half way (meaning you need only 10 seconds instead of 20) and you can then access your boot space.

how do you do this? i have Comford Access and knew about roof open/close. how do you do the comfort loading, do you simply let go of the button after the roof meets the windscreen?

Turning and holding the key in the door lock does indeed retract the roof - thanks for the tip. Utterly pointless but mildly amusing nonetheless. :)

Opening by this method probably is probably a bit pointles - but closing it is definatey NOT!

I have difficulty getting out of my car when it's in the garage due to a pillar (which cannot be moved) being in the way of the door and me having a dodgy/knackered/wobbly leg problem. So it's much easier for me to get out with the roof down and then give the key in the door a twist. :D

Is the key in lock thing a comfort access thing?

I tried it yesterday and couldn't get it to open (or close) with the key in the door lock.

Can you explain how you do it...ie car locked and alarmed, key in, turn (to right I think) for how long?

Not at home at the mo but I usually do it from the un alarmed position and again from memory, twist the key clockwise and hold for five seconds or more and hold in that position, the roof will start its cycle.

To back up what Ronk has said: I turned my key clockwise and held for circa 3 seconds. I then had to keep holding until the cycle had completed. I can only assume this is standard (on my 2011 3.0i model at least) as I don't have the Comfort Pack. I'm working on the fact that if I did have the Comfort Pack then I could do all of this from the key fob. Hope this helps. :)

I think they have made a mistake in not including total closure on the fob button.
Neglecting the pose value, if it starts raining when the roof is down, how convenient to press a button from the lounge window! :D

I'll give it another go and perhaps RTFM.....

No thats defeat!

Try the key in both directions first - Then go RTFM!

If you do the reading dont tell your wife/girlfriend!

That's true can only be closed with the key if you have comfort access.....silly I know....what's the difference!! That's like saying only if you have a bigger engine can you close it with the key!! Who thought of something so stupid!!!
I thought there was a more technical reason, like the comfort access knows whether the key is inside or outside of the car. I wonder if closing from the remote still works from inside the car, or doing it from the outside but with someone still in the car, will it still work?

Go do a few trials please :poke:

Well I tried it again....unlocked car with key fob then put key in, turned it clockwise and held for more than 5 seconds and nothing happened.

Didn't try it anti-clockwise, but that locks the car, so logically it shouldn't open the roof.

Havent rtfm yet, so theres still hope for me!

It was in response to your previous comment, but not aimed at you in a nasty way, I thought you had pack and access confused, hence emphasising those words in my post.

My mistake, no offence intended.

No offence taken. I didn't write my original post very well or the second one come to think of it.

The same dealer also told me the roof on mine works up to 20mph (he must have been thinking of the new Z4). I only found out it didn't whilst getting doused in slow traffic an M62 slip road. Thankfully the smart top has now fixed that.

I really need to record all my dealer conversations in future. :)

^ this is a common problem that I find...the dealers product knowledge can be poor, or confused between different versions/years of car.

It can be forgiven at times, but if the dealer tells you the car does have something and you base your buying decision on that, then its a pain if he was wrong.

My 23i closed the roof with the key.

The iS has a problem with this and the dealer is looking into it.

The car seems to go to sleep and the central locking doesn't work either (with the key in the lock).

Other times it works fine :? usually just after taking the fob out of its slot.

The car they gave me for my test drive had this feature and I was going to add it to my spec but when I took car back the salesman advised against it due to the fact that it would probaly knacker the battery if used to much , Like others on here getting out of the car in garage with roof raised is tricky so it would be nice to be able get out with roof down and and then close roof

Visited an independent today on an unrelated matter and asked about the key fob closure. He confirmed that it's a safety setting for the UK. However, it's simply a binary flag (on/off) on the car's computer. So as the customer I requested the flag to be changed to 'on' and hey presto, my roof should now close using the fob :D . I say 'should' as I haven't actually tested it yet. If it's not raining tomorrow I'll give it a go and post the result on here.

Comfort access here and I can open and close the roof with the key fob, lock doors by touching under the door handle and start car with key in my pocket so closing the roof could be linked to Comfort access I guess. :)

I've never used a key with my E89? :?

Hi Breaker. Yes, if you've paid for the Comfort option then you have the ability to close the roof automatically, but what the indie has done for me appears to be a way for the rest of us to get this particular feature. The discussion earlier in the thread is that it makes a mockery of the supposed safety aspect of non-remote closure when you can specify Comfort when ordering your car and completely negate it. :?
