So there must be a feed that is live without ignition, however both are controlled through other means. (Indicator stalk)

I suspect that rather than there being a permenant ignition 'on' feed to the headlight unit, each of these features is activated by software switching on that circuit.

Actually, what I would really like to have is that the lights (as they would be in the first position of the switch) go on and off when opening and closing the car. Same as the interior lighting. But I don't think that's even possible... I guess the ignition feed still makes best sense. I'll try checking all wires before cutting up the lights. I would like to have my questions answered before I go on my adventure :)

Anything is possible with relays or small circuit board. I have door lights, puddle lights, etc. controlled on that circuit so you could make the AE do the same.

My AE are fitted as suggested in your opening paragraph. The sidelight bulb is still in place but the feed now goes to the AE instead. They are therefore on at all times the lights are on.

That's probably the simpliest solution... If I find out anything more or new, whatever I try, I will try to post some pics on the wiring for the next adventurer who might have the same question :wink:
 
Apparantly a light module exists from "Xcar-style" for the Z4 E85 with which you can choose a whole bunch of lighting options! Here's the link for those who are interested... With this I can have my AE's on all the time + follow-me home principle...

As mentioned before I have bought some LED angels rings that are much (much) brighter than the CCFL ones, also whiter in colour


I managed to pickup a spare set of headlights on eBay some weeks ago, so doing the infamous cut and shut...

Only thing is how long would these LED rings last vs CCFL?

I do prefer the whiter colour, always thought the CCFL look too blue and after market.
 
I would say the LED are the same as the CCFL with regards to life, 1000's of hours - Infact LED probably even more as the CCFL glass tube is very brittle

Saying that cj's had his installed for 3 years and still going strong :thumbsup:
 
Bad_Pritt, that's an impressive garage.... almost out does the efforts you've made on the lights (which are also good!).

Looking good! Clears takes years off the car, with angels even more...

However the best feeling is that you did it yourself :)

What gratitude. 36 pages of follow-on posts and 4 years after I posted the 'how to', to make this conversion, you guys are now opening and closing lights on a daily basis and showing me my ccfl's are no good...lol
