Clear light and Angel Eye Conversion - The Project and Story

cheers, will have a go this weekend.

i suppose it's a case of trial and error. luckily with donor lights, i can take as long as i want

Any advice on where to buy the AE rings? The original site now have them at $20 each, and ebay only have ones from china!

Well I had a week off work last week for my sons birthday and our wedding anniversary so I decided it was good time to spend in the garage butchering the bargain clear xenons I picked up recently.

Clears cut from the flood damaged xenons that I bought. They were full of pond life so took a fai bit of cleaning. Wrapped the orange domes as per suggested on here. My ginger xenons were in near perfect condition so it was very scary cutting them open.

Clear boomerangs added. There was loads of little bits of plastic from the cutting all over everything. I cleaned everything as best I could with my roof drain cleaning tubing attached to the Hoover before I took the lights inside (most people seem to do the job in the kitchen)

All glued up and ready to go. Maybe a bit excessive with the silicone but I wanted to make sure there would be no leaks. I glued the 2 parts together then ran a healthy bead around the seam. Can't be seen when on the car.

And finally on the car

Did the side repeaters last month so just need to sort out some rear lights to be a completely ginger free zone.

Thanks to all that gave me advice on doing this mod.

Oh, meant to add that after much consideration I decided not to fit AEs. I like the auto light feature and always leave my lights in auto so they would never be on.

Excellent work - I also went overboard on the adhesive on my first set of lights, but figured more than less was best

I might be joining the exclusive ginger free club very soon.

Passenger hockey stick coming from Germany... EUR 23 + EUR17 postage (yer right) per EBay

Drivers side clear headlamp coming from some guy who was advertising a facelift bumper & chanced my luck... £25 inc postage

LED Angel Eyes supposedly coming from Ireland again, as first lot didn't turn up ... £42 inc postage

Think I'm going to win the prize for cheapest deginger... just hope all the parts turn up & better not frak it up!

Jembo, I'm glad to hear that you got all the parts for what sounds like an absolute bargain. The job isn't that difficult, just a bit scary and time consuming. Best bit of advice is to take your time and get some good cutting discs. I did a test light with the resin discs and I went through about 20 of them. I then got these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/6PC-HSS-Steel-Saw-Cutting-Disc-Wheel-Set-Fits-Dremel-Mini-Drills-Cut-Off-Discs-/280975609360?pt=UK_BOI_Metalworking_Milling_Welding_Metalworking_Supplies_ET&hash=item416b738e10#ht_5952wt_1054 which made the job so much easier.

I'm now left with all the internals from the donor facelift xenons. Would the wiring including the ballasts and ignitors be of use to anyone? Maybe a halogen to xenon conversion is possible.

If they are working Mowflow, just bought a ballast (used) with a 6 month guarantee for ~ £70 on fleabay :)

Hmmm, could be worth listing them on the bay. If I got near that figure for each one then it would be a free mod for me :)

how did you guys go about wrapping the domes with the mirror tint, more specifically the rounded part on the end?

the sides are easy enough, but i had to fold a bit over the ends which ends up in bits overlapping. i then held them up to a light and the overlapped bits are darker than the sides.

would you notice this once it's all back together?

decided to try doing it anyway, and the result seemed ok. can't see any problems with them and used a flashing light app on my phone to emulate an indicator flash, and seemed fine.

I just kind of cut the ends into 4 bits that I could fold over. It looked to me like the ends being so heavily wrapped might have been a problem but when fitted you don't notice as a lot of the light output is from reflection on the mirrored backing of the hockey stick.

I've got another problem. After driving home last night both my lights had a bit of misting. Looks like squeezing the whole tube of silicone into them hasn't done the job :headbang:  Anyone know an easy way to find where the leak might be?

Either way it's bumper and lights of again for me. Ordered some extra special underwater black silicone to reseal them. Pain in the bollocks all the same.

100% it will be the back cover

I bought some new back covers a few weeks ago and hey presto i have moisture in my lights 2 days ago

I also used a shedload of silicone so was sure this wasnt the issue - when i pull off the backing plate there was moisture all around the rubber gasket. so i pulled out the rubber then pushed it back in, although not fully. I only pushed half of it in then attached it back onto the light, this meant the rubber was better seated

2 days on, plus a load of rain i havent had any moisture build up

As above - pull half of the rubber out then reseat the cover

Just make sure you dry out the light first using a hair dryer

Cheers Ranski, i'll give that a go.

Did you leave the lights on the car and just remove the covers from the wheel arch when you did this? Removing the lights/bumper isn't actually that bad but I prefer to avoid work that isn't completely necessary.

you can just turn the wheel at full lock, also open the bonnet to get a bit of light to see what your doing

from there just remove the backing plate - which does take a bit of wiggling
