I've sourced the 85mm rings from here:

No additional inverters so I'm making an assumption that the existing ones I have for the 80mm rings will run them.

I'm planning to keep the covers on. I know the rings look cleaner without but I think they'll be much, much easier to glue neatly with the flat surface the covers offer on the rear. One thing that will really p*ss me off is if I can see a single blob of glue/silicone once I've finished.

I'm looking at ordering these 80 and 85mm CCFLs for your Ebay link, do you know if they come with inverters or do I need to buy these separately?

They don't come with inverters. To be honest, I didn't fit AEs in the end. They just didn't look OEM enough to my eyes and being a fussy sod I got the feeling I'd end up regretting it. That's not to diss anyone on here who has fitted them, they're just not for me. Absolutely delighted with my new clear indicator look though! 8)
 
I'm thinking the same too, i'm quite happy with the look of the headlights so maybe i'd do without the angel eyes too - There's less to go wrong and it means i'll be able to de-tango sooner!

All I need to do now is

1) Source some good replacement sidelight bulbs (either LED or nice white bulbs)
2) buy a cutting tool / dremel or similar
3) Hope for some nice weather so that I can begin chopping open the lights!

And both headlights have the right flick in the US.

Seems a little odd to me though. While great for lighting further on the shoulders it shines right into other drivers cars while passing on a motorway with more than one lane in each direction...

So it seems this 'flick' can be removed...?

Cleaning the car this morning I noticed that one of the angel rings didn't look quite right. On closer inspection the 85mm ring from the main light had come loose, all others are fine.

I think, infact know what has happened (yes I know you pre warned me Phil :) ) the two parts inside the light have flexed and pushed the ring so detaching it from its glued fixing.

With this I will have to cut the light open to fix. infact I will be replacing the 85mm with a 80mm ring and fitting inside the cove so the above won't occur again

With this I do think both 80mm rings is the way forward.

Hey all, I have brought my 2 clear complete units i bought of ebay 2 years ago from my parents attic over to commence butchering :rofl: i still cant decide if I should go with CJ's original method of carefully cutting out the lense cleaning the channel etc or just cutting round the edge then gluing back together. I am guessing the first option may be the better job but a lot more time consuming. i originally started cutting the backs of the new clear ones but the dremel tool burnt out.... armed with a new one i shall now continue 2 years later :rofl: fingers crossed... I see some more mods coming now I have a drive to park the car on!
 
Mine have been sitting in the house for the last 2 months waiting to be done, I'm itching to get started on them!

How easy is it to damage the silver inners? I have not chopped open my Xenons yet, but they have silver inners, and I need to make sure I dont damage them.

Will finger prints etc wipe off, or is it a "no touch" area?
 
Pretty sure in this guide somewhere or at least on the forum it says touch them on pain of death.
 
As above. I experimented trying to remove finger prints on some spare inners which was impossible without micro-scratching the finish to bits.
 
I think I'll buy some plastic gloves tonight. Chopping open the donor set and getting to the necessary parts was impossible without touching the black inners... Don't want to wreck the silvers :(

I know the black liners point to a 'smaller engined' Zed but personally I think they look better than the chrome ones.
As did Zermattv when he purchased black lined lights for his Maldives Blue 3.0.
 
Somewhere in my post I'm sure I mentioned once open, work in hospital theatre like conditions. Finger prints will show and you can be sure the tiniest fleck of black plastic will be drawn soon to the clear lens as if by magic...

Yep. I had a couple of those tiny flecks magically appear on my lense after initial testing but all was not lost. A hoover with some bendy straws fed through the rear opening managed to get the little buggers! Best not have them there in the first place though of course.
 
I fear I will need to do a Hoover inside the lights. Even chopping open the donor set today left lots of black stoor (that's a Scottish word for mess/dust) inside and around the inners :(
