Clear light and Angel Eye Conversion - The Project and Story

If you do tint the indicators be sure to do some serious bench testing. When I changed mine to clear I also decided to remove the amber capsules to get rid of the fried egg look. That took me several iterations of covering them with mirror foil to eventually glass painting the actual bulbs to get back to a decent amber 'flash'.

Also be aware the inside of the indicators do warm up. They contain a pair of 21w bulbs so if you leave hazzards on the get hot pretty quick.

Good luck cutting them up - always fun and very dusty :)

Thanks CJ

I would be tinting the outside of the hockey stick, so imagine the additional distance from the bulb will result in lower temps. I also have some tint spray to try. I'm not sure how easily it will wash off, I may have to try on something else first.

I'm going to get this cutting kit to use to ensure I have enough cutting blades http://www.diy.com/nav/fix/power-tools/accessories/power-tools/cutters/Dremel-Mini-Set-Cutting-Kit-26150688JA-9288361

If you can wrap the film around the amber and secure it then that will work. Obviously you can't wrap it over to the inside else it will block more light and perhaps create a shadow.

Tinting could be good as it will be protected from the elements. Trial and error to create a good shade while not blocking the amber colour when flashing.

The cutting kit should be good. I use cut off wheels about 3cm diameter. Fast enough speed to cut but not so fast as to melt everything .

The real issue is trying to find a way to tint it so it looks good with the silver inserts. As my early testing showed, making it match a black inner is easy, making it work well with a silver inner will be hard.

The clear indicator is clear, not silver, so making it look oem is impossible. Its just a matter of reducing the orange until new boomerangs are available.

I also need to find a colour to spray the inserts... 8)

Sorry T2FFN, couldn't view your pics onmy work PC and forget to check back when at home. Good work so far, still watching this with interest.

I'm getting impatient (no with anyone!) and am keen to experiment myself, so if anyone has a spare orange boomerang they'd be willing to send to me I'd be very grateful!

Need to get some clear boomerangs moulded. I think another member is in the process...

For a few hundred quid you could get the same lights as Nosa and JP? If it werent for my xenons, I would... :)

Nah, not interested (or willing!) to spend that amount of money on lights. I do like what they've got and had a good look at them at the weekend, but being honest the orange doesn't overly offend me. Well, not to the degree of £300 :)

A cheap modification is more in keeping with my plans.

So what lights do Nosa and JP have? Every time I see my lights, I feel a little sick!

They're on eBay. c.£300. Just search Z4 headlights. Non OEM, but most importantly no amber :)

Nosa had a post in the lounge showing them

Oh them, I spoke to a few sellers about these and they tell me "it is totally normal for these lights to condensate and fill with water" are they trying to get out of warranty issues for crap build quality. Ive already got water issues with the standard lights! Not so sure on those yet!

Right, a small update on progress from me.

I have spent most of the day getting the lights cut open. Funny stpry but will maybe add some more details to the how to for people that are not using 2 sets of lights, as things are a little different to this guide.

Anyway, I've literally sent 2mins applying the first tint to the boomerang. This is the result:

At first I was a bit disappointed as it still looked too orange, but when in the light and the lens is on, it dulls it enough to look pleasing, and almost blend with the silver inner.

I have a few other options to play with, but this looks ok to start with. Applying the final tint well will be the killer, no bubbles, creases etc as I'm not a pro.

Oh, and this is how my inner looked, which is why it needed opening and painting!!
The silver had perished when it was wet.

With reversed mirror tint it would suit a dark inner, so for anyone with black inners, should be an easy 'cover up'.

Not sure how bright the ambers would flash through this though. Would be a massive ball-ache if you had to remove.

I prefer the white tint personally. Now to see how it looks with white inners or light silver inners (not chrome inners as OEM)

Oh, anyone in Hull area that could help polish the $%£& out of my headlight lenses? They look pants!

I'm guessing its 10000x quicker with a polisher and the right pads etc, none of which I have.

Black on black might look a little... black.

If you're buying a dremel, also buy a motorbike helmet. Mine came in handy, especially when I broke a few cutting discs that would otherwise be embedded in my face! Plus it stops the tremendous amounts of dust going in your face!

love the halo lights , also love the splash of yellow , i would keep the yellow lenzes , after all its a fasion thing
the halo light are classic as is yellow indicator lenzes :driving:

First coat of white primer is on. Looks strangely cool, very flat white. When its dry enough I'll try a test fit with white inners.

The primer was quite runny though, was a bugger for little runs even with light sprays. The enamel sprays are usually so easy to spray, so not used to such a runny paint.
