Clear light and Angel Eye Conversion - The Project and Story

Sorry, so how do you cut and reuse a set of lights without needing spare headlights? Do you cut the lens or the black back?

yes you can reuse your exisiting lights - read over the first few pages of this thread, but in short you cut along the groove by my finger in the below picture - This then allows you to part the headlight screen and the headlights itself, you can then replace the amber hockey stick and install angel eyes - Once finished you just glue it back together, remember this groove isnt seen when the headlight is fitted on the car

Thanks guys. Being able to reuse light units opens up possibilities, although clear "boomerangs" are still going to be the hard thing to find.

Big Fan of your motor Ranski looks great  One problem tho I have finally sourced after around 6 months of searching two clear xenon pre-facelift lights for my xenon upgrade, problem is I now want to cut the buggers open for the angel-eyes :?

Thanks Ranski,

it is an air scoop. Rogue Engineering makes it. They come in black or red. I can't remember if I ordered from the company itself or from Modbargains. They are about 129 USD. Very easy install. You dont need an aftermarket air filter to use it although I do.

I have an AFE cold air intake. Glad I did both. You can really feel the air scoop after the 60 mph point.

*update

I have been having a quick play at wrapping the amber hockey sticks in one way mirrored vinyl.

However after having a go this morning i noted the following

- The mirrored vinyl completey masks the amber stick

- The indicator light is nice and bright and not inhibited by the vinyl

- Chrome inners with the mirrored vinyl wrap do not go at all well, blacks are only a tad better on the eye

- As demonstrated in the below pictures, the curvature on the amber sticks makes applying the vinyl very tricky
(although i did only spend a matter of minutes attaching the vinyl as a demo)

Please no bashing on the wrap - this was a quick fit just to show the 'look of it' which personally i think looks a little cheap

With the overall look of the mirrored finish i dont think i will pursue this any further as it looks quite cheap and tacky :x

Ranski,

Good work on trying this so quickly, we all appreciate it. I wish I had a spare light to test with, I love problem solving and will not take no for an answer

I was doing some reading on mirror tint, and something I have read is you can put another tint over it, say in this case, a very light 5% grey tint. This would reduce the BLING as it currently looks like its wrapped in foil

There are also other mirror tints that are less silver and less mirrored, which could also be another route. I don't think this is ready to be shelved yet.

You've done a top job there ranski I'm impressed. Glad the battered set of lights were of use, I couldn't understand what you were planning to do with them when we spoke on the phone!

Hi mate, following Cjeeps' guide i i butchered that set, i harvested the clear lens and headlight screen - but yes, i have the left overs now to mess around with :)

I will have another look around for other types of mirrored film - but if anyone else has any ideas post them up

PS i have some transulcent 'tamiya' silver spray i may have a go with, but i suspect this will cause issues in later life as the heat from the sun and lights discolours the paint.

Good effort ranski. Think you're right, it would look a bit naff of silver inners :(

I'm thinking either the two layer method might work, or something less mirror'd:

All I have are my old orange side repeaters so assuming they're about the same shade of orange, I will experiment with hiding the orange on them...

Hi, any news on this? Anyone tried anything else?

I've just ordered some mirror smoke tint to see if it looks better than full mirror tint. I don't have a sacrificial headlight so won't be able to fully test it on the boomerang, unless anyone can spare a spare orange boomerang / smashed headlight?

I have got an orange side repeater, so will test it on that orange-ness, but for inside the headlight looks I won't be able to test. If I think it looks promising, I could send Ranski some of the tint to try on a real headlight :poke:

Right, so my tint film arrived today so had a little experiment... but clearly didn't think it through when I bought it... all will become clear, or not.

So, its mirror smoke tint from ebay for only a few £ for 1m x 0.5m. (smallest they do)

I didn't really think about which side of the film would be 'sticky' and which would be mirror smoke... Doh! :headbang:

So when applied using the sticky side, the mirror smoke side is against the orange, so is wrong way around... Resulting look is very dark, with a very subtle hint that there is some orange behind it.

When a light is applied it still shines orange

To be fair, in a black headlight this might look good, very stealth and dark...?

So, using some sticky tape for the purpose of the experiment, with mirror smoke on the outside, it looks, well, smoked mirror chrome...

Its very difficult to get a picture to fully portray how it looks in the flesh, but I would say with the mirror smoke side facing out as intended, it looks a lot better than full on tin foil mirror tint!!

Plan B: Find mirror smoke with sticky side correct way around, so it won't be regular window tint...

Plan C: Use the same tin foil tint Ranski used, but overlay it with a very light smoke tint, and I mean very light, like 5-10% smoke tint. This should take enough of the shine off it to calm it down...

Anyway, comments welcome.

Ranski, as you have an open headlight, I'm happy to send you this tint to see how it looks, both ways around inside an actual headlight unit. I think using tape to hold it with mirror smoke facing out, it will look ok, but proof is in the pudding as they say.

Cheers

I've ordered two different tint films, and a tint spray.

Due to a water issue in my headlight, I'm going to need to open them anyway, so might as well make the most of it.

Ranski, dont bother sending that headlight now if you haven't already, mine are going to see the sharp end of a dremmel on friday.

Can you post what type of adhesive sealer you used to 'glue' them back together?

And to be 100% clear, did you cut the light in the groove between the clear and the black plastic, where the two meet?

Thanks... not looking forward to the first incision

Could you also post a link to where I can get a set of double angel eyes that you used? How long is delivery and how much?

Thanks again

Missed your earlier updates, but look forward to the results.

I am getting closer to buying a dremel... Need to de-amber my lights

No worries. My hand has been forced to open the light as the silver has been damaged by the excess condensation.

<y car is black so think I'll try to keep the silver lights, but with black inners, tinting the orange hockey sticks to a light black tint is so easy! Would look good all black on a silver car, but all black on a black car doesn't seem to look right in my head. I think it needs the contrast. I may end up with a sightly different colour than the stock bright silver chrome look though... which might make it easier matching the tint... all a guessing game, but I want to be done by Sunday!
