Clean before winter..?

The zed is an embarrassing state from several motorway journeys and I'm considering whether it's worth getting him valeted properly before winter or not? ideally I'd like to get some scratches buffed (machine polished?) out too (and wheel refurbed but one thing at a time)..considering that he is a daily driver (~15m) and kept on driveway (though I have a cover now) is it futile getting him spiffed up only to wrecked by the weather after 1hr? OR wait till spring?

Hehe, forum rules call for a counter argument.

I'd say get it done properly. Washed, clayed, polished, waxed. All nicely sealed to keep the crud off the paint through the winter.

Are you using the cover on top of dirty paintwork?

That'll do more harm than good. But I'd definitely get a defect deep clean and wax done.

Nope, I haven't used the cover yet…for that reason. Any recommendations for places in the south west please?

I would get it cleaned and sealed properly before winter, but leave any machine polishing and wheel refurbs to after.

make sure you sort out the underside of the car, no point having shiny paintwork if the arse if the car is all rusty and falling apart... most people (inc "professionals") only seem to care about the shiny bodywork....

Good point, how would you treat the underside then?

Wait until spring and don't drive it if the roads are wet and salty 8)

Why it's a modern car a bit of salt and water isn't going to hurt it. Just give it a blast with the jet wash every couple of weeks.

If you want to go all out and can't be bothered then get a place to do it, otherwise wash/wax drive with roof down, heaters on full on crisp sunny days :).

We have a really good hand was here called the 5 star wash over last winter I got them to do the car once a month on their ultimate shine job.

I 'deep cleaned' mine back in June, so this weekend I washed it, went over the paintwork with Megs ultimate compound, then Poorboys black hole, then two coats of Dodo Juice Purple Haze Pro. Should do the job for a while, just need to make sure it gets a wash regularly when the roads get salty & grimy. When I change to winter wheels I'll give the arches a good clean, but that's it.

I give the underside a good clean with strong de greaser, iron x and de tar it.

treat any bits I need with bilt hamber hydrate 80.

maybe paint it with either black or silver paint.

then treat with Bilt Hamber dynax UC.

job done. :D

Do you think it would be worth just a clean with de greaser only? without a ramp i'd have no chance of the others, but i could probably manage the clear and degreaser with my axle stands.

yes, I always think it's worth giving it a clean... the less build up of crud and salt etc the better for the car - regardless of age.

wheel arches, undertrays, side sills etc can all hold an amazing amount of crap...

I stick my car on axle stands... the dynax UC is sprayable - very quick and easy to use.

 when i do my winter wheel switch i'll give that a go.

One tip for the op... Clear your roof drains before winter, last thing you want is water building up and freeZing around the motor.

Ideally I will clean her before winter truly sets in, get a good layer of wax on and then leave her until spring, but in reality it is already too bloody cold out there to be messing about with water.....
Vanilla how come yours is a male ??????

Bing, is that Poorboys stuff as good as I read about for Black Sapphire?

Might be visiting ebay.

Yes - Adamski uses it on his, as do a number of others. It's full of fillers, so whilst it is not abrasive and won't get rid of swirls and scratches, it does hide them well when combined with a good wax. Two applications is best, followed by two coats of wax... I didn't have time to do it twice on mine, as I needed to wait 24hrs before applying the second coat of wax.
