Classic car auctions - Z3M

I was listening to the live webcast of the Brooklands Historic aution today - one of the lots was a 99 Estoril blue Z3M with 51k warranted miles on the clock, guide price £15-£18k.

Now, I know that Z3M prices are on the up but this Lot sold for £23k, which, including 10% buyers premium and related VAT = £25,800k and that for a car that you can't test drive!

I can't help thinking that the buyer caught auction fever, as it seems a little overpriced. But I was wondering has anyone, with hindsight, felt they overpaid at such auctions?

£25,800k - wow they really are rising quickly!!

It is a lot of money for a what it is. Of late dealers have been buying up all of the UK stock and artificially raising the price. I've been watching the market for four or five years, planning to buy one as another weekend toy but the prices are now stupid. A 70-80k mile Cat D car with no history can have an asking price of £12-15k. A garage in the NL have had several for sale for as long as I've been looking and have sold only one to my knowledge. Yet they raise the asking prices of their stock every few months. The car they did sell was a cat d car that I nearly bought from a UK vendor in early 2014. He was asking £8K for a car with a badly aligned bumper, a very noisy VANOS, a dodgy throttle cable/pedal and shot driver's seat mountings. It had almost no service history and no record of the accident or the repairs. I walked away and he sold it to the Dutch trader. They in turn sold it for £12-13k. For the price of a good one, I would buy something else (Z4MC, Noble, Radical etc depending on your individual bent). I've more or less stopped looking as they aren't available for what I deem appropriate money anymore. Many would disagree with me, especially those who own Z3MCs
Of interest I also turned down an immaculate 150k mile Z3M Roaster for £5k, now that was probably a mistake!

To be honest I haven't been tracking Z3M prices too closely but given the rarity and the low mileage I suppose it's not surprising it sold at that price! Just wish I had the money to buy one.

Tend to agree with StevenH72 - it does bode well for well cared for Z4Ms!

I can - yesterday :P Imola ///M Coupe in Buckinghamshire looking fantastic. I pass a silver S50 every day in Balham too. There's a black one near me in SW London too.

Music to my ears

I was thinking of you when I saw the car online!

Can't remember the last time I saw a Z3MC on the road.

Neither can I! Mines not left the garage in weeks due to being away, work etc.

There has been a bit of talk over at the MCoupe forum on this and the opinion has been split between those that don't care as they'd never sell, those that care as its been a good investment for them, and then those that hate it as they've not got on board quick enough and have been priced out of the market.

Personally speaking I'm happy I own one and can drive it but equally I'm intrigued as to its worth. Given recent uplifts in prices, my Imola 77k miler S50 may be one of the best purchase decisions I ever made.

My sister was just reading our local paper (Melksham Independent News) & said the local garage she uses to service her 1 series have an article about a Z3M coupe the owner had bought at an auction recently. Turns out it is this one. He paid more than he was going to but went to buy that car as he has wanted one for ages. He already has a Z3M roadster, which is a lovely car. We are going to drop in & have a look sometime.
