Christmas..... bah humbug!

I'm usually indifferent about Christmas until its actually almost Christmas at which time i dont mind admitting I enjoy a couple of days kicking back, but this year i've been having a bit of a downer about the whole thing, it started when i heard the pogues playing in morrisons in October, on the way home from morissons i clicked through the stations and a local station was playing last christmas by wham. its been grinding my gears ever since, its everywhere i turn, every shop i go in and every tv show i put on its the same christmas ads. The council estate i shortcut through on the way to work have had their tacky LED outdoor reindeer and sleighs etc. in the front garden for over a month already.

The good woman has put the tree up in our house today, which is early for her, usually its about a week or 2 before, but at least we are now in the correct month of Christmas.... :)

I think its the hype and commercialisation of it all, it gets earlier and earlier every year and what christmas actually is for gets lost in an obsessively commercial promotion about "the best deal". I find it difficult to believe most of society wants to listen to christmas songs when they've nipped out for milk and a loaf in October.... even near Christmas we will still buy the same stuff will we not whether they are playing away in a manger surrounded by Christmas tree's in every corner or not!

the good woman is saying i need to get into the spirit of Christmas, which i do when it is actually approaching Christmas.... ie. the next few weeks. the way it all gets earlier and earlier ruins it for me, ive had enough of it all already.

is it just me? probably..... :)

harrumph... /rant over

Xmas = Modern day commercialism at it's best !

Why do you need a specific day of the year to begift those who mean the most to you and spend time with them?
Surely if they are held so dear, the same sentiment can be done at any point in the year?

I'm with you, I really like the week before Christmas up to Boxing day, then I'd pack everything away, but swmbo won't let me!

There are quite a few houses on my street that are decorated up already, inside and out, they don't even have small kids!

Your hats on order... :D :D :D

Deck the halls with boughs of holly,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Tis the season to be jolly,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

As a very enthusiastic practising atheist the actual day means very little but there is still much to celebrate about this time of year .
1) time off work & commuting ( 3weeks for me :) )
2) lots of great food & drink
3) getting together with friends & family not seen for a few months ( i don,t bother with ones i don,t wanna see )
4) lots of time to go out walking the dog
5) more Zed time :D

forget the bad bits & enjoy the good :D works for me

The only good thing about it is that the roads are clear for a good hoon.Other than that it's awful.

Christmas for me is just about the two weeks off work that i get,ooh and the ipad the Gf has got me

I love mini eggs

But I am just as grumpy about Christmas - I only enjoy the day itself, the bank holiday assisted holidays, and New Year... My wallet is aching already :(

ahhh some like minded people, i thought there might be one or two...

im not religious either, but i wonder if i were, would i be disappointed about what christmas represents to ordinary folk (getting hammered and maxing the credit card with tat, i read an article detailing how there are a lot of kids out there that just think its about gifts, no idea why it is celebrated). Like others above, for me it means time off, good food and drink, i usually have mountains of annual leave left that cant be taken beyond december, so im doing 3 day weeks from last week until next year.... every friday and monday off. This is the first year i can recall having Christmas thrust upon me in October though! :x

I like it like this: Week leading upto Christmas winding down from work, on the day itself, eating/drinking/giving decent gifts to "close" family and friends and then some time out through to new years day. Other than that, Christmas can do one.... especially going to the supermarket when everyones buying 88 loaves and 233 tins of roses. I have my shopping delivered throughout December for this reason :)

I share your sentiments about the roads being empty. roof down motoring at its best if its a clear day between Christmas/new year

and as andysat says it'll be Easter on boxing day... :)

glad im not the only one, i remember as a kid my mom complaining about the adverts for christmas coming on "and its only the first week of December...." just shows how far they've taken it now. It makes me sad that people must be taken in by it as they do it year after year, earlier and earlier!

'Empty driving roads'

I will be in Scotland, my Z will be in Maidstone. Nightmare !

When i was in Costa on the 2nd November they sprinkled chocolate on my cappuccino in the shape of a Christmas tree. I almost asked them for another one :x

As someone who is religious. "but not militant about said religion" I have grown weary of the silliness of it all. Of course most Christians haven't the foggiest idea of how the Christmas holidays got started. It has to do with a Roman emperor named Constantine. Who was the first christian ruler. He tried to blend the pagan saturnalia event, Gift giving end of the year parties with his Christian believes.
So as a Christian. I wouldn't care if it (Christmas) went the way of the Dodo.

But. What bothers me more. Is the fact that in the US we have a lot of "militant" anti social Atheists that love to stir the pot and try to ruin any Christmas celebrations. They may be in the minority among Atheists. But they are loud, in your face, And just as annoying as the train platform Evangelists trying to convert strangers. Is it the same in the UK?

Yep, total bah humbug here too.Waste of time and money. I too have a load of holiday to use up and so will be wondering what on earth to for the best part of 2 weeks.I'm planning to finish my motorbike project as long as it has come back from the exhaust fabricator,so fingers crossed.

This year we are all going to the beach and having bacon butties .Solves all the shopping cooking etc.

Next year I really want to feck off somewhere hot for 2 weeks. SWMBO agrees

Used to be Bah Humbug but since getting so much older the realisation of life not being a rehearsal has taken hold - we have our "children " and their partners visiting - eldest son plus daughter-in-law , granddaughter and mad spaniel staying a couple of days then second son with partner plus two house rabbits for 3 days including Christmas and Boxing Day. Youngest daughter back from Cardiff all Christmas week. Before all this we'll be up in London to stay with eldest daughter , son-in-law and four grandsons , another granddaughter, three cats and another even madder spaniel.

Christmas is all about families - corny but true !

Wife loves Christmas. For me, I'll start celebrating on 10th Dec when I'm taking the rest of the year off work party-smiley-050.gif

That isnt bah humbug at all! Christmas gatherings at christmas are fine. Thats how it should be... its starting in October thats twisting my melon!

Funny someone should mention about getting away somewhere hot. The other half has mentioned doing that a couple of times this year.
