Check those tyre pressures!

I've been thinking my car has felt a bit wooly up front recently, and has been understeering quite a bit in the recent wet weather.

i was going to post something about suspension bushings, or alignment, and then it struck me that it's been a few months since i checked the tyres. They were all at 27-28psi

back at 32/32 and it's all perked up again! i usually check them every 3 months but its easy to forget

Last time my 320d felt a little woolly with additional understeer I checked the front tyre pressures and found one to be 25 psi, and the other.........15psi :o

Should check them weekly if you're anal about these things, certainly monthly in a high performance car. The warning system only seems to detect a sudden decrease in pressure. :(

I used to check them every couple of weeks, but in about 10 years of doing so on various cars i only ever needed to put air in every couple of months, so i decided i was doing it too often

Thanks to my previous wheels cracking, deflating slowly, then ruining two tyres, I now check very regularly indeed!

My front end also seems wooshy washy. I am sure I over inflated the tires and turning feels more difficult. I always thought over inflated tires would help ease power steering feel, or am I wrong?

Wow, 3 months is way too long. Climate changes between seasons alone can result in changes to the pressures I find, without any leakage.
Depends on milage but i'd say every 3 weeks as a maximum between pressure checks. During months when the weather has bigger changes I'd say they should be checked more often.

I check at least every fortnight, but usually every week. Loosing 5-10 psi over 3 months isn't too bad.

Actually the uk system checks the relative rotation of one wheel to its opposite so in fact if the tyres all go down a similar amount it wouldn't spot it at all. Intention is to spot one deflating, not so much suddenly but different to the others.

Of course the lesson to your point is to keep them checked.

Well, I hadn't checked my pressure since I bought the car  which is a little over a month now and found the fronts to be at 29 and the rears at 30......

On checking, sorted them out and it has helped out the tramlining issue and seems a more pleasant ride (I'm still on RFT's) so maybe I can live with hem for a little longer before I change them....

I bought this a few weeks ago on eBay for less than £10:

It seems to give accurate consistant readings and saves me having to go to a garage or unpack my inflator kit just to check pressures.

I would definately recommend it.
