My brothers wife wants a small city car.

Prerequisites:

5 doors
Cheap to insure/run
Aircon

Modern. 2008+low mileage

Not more than 3k

Any suggestions please? No Italian cars.

My wife has a Citroen C1, cheap to run, cheap to tax, cheap to insure, aircon, nothing fancy to go wrong. Had it from new in 2009 and can't remember any problems. It's based on a small engine that was put into 3 different cars; Citroen C1, Peugeot 107 and Toyota Aygo. Think the Citroen is the slightly cheaper of the 3.

Quick look on auto trader didnt bring much up with low milage <40k :( Chevrolets and protons... not particularly desirable.

The odd Ford fiesta/KA or Renault Clio, Vauxhall Meriva, Peugeot 207 was popping up

Im looking into this myself.

City cars:
Toyota Aygo
Suzuki Alto
Suzuki Splash
Hyundai i10
Kia Picanto
Suzuki Wagon R

Sperminis:
Toyota Yaris
Skoda Fabia
Seat Ibiza
Volkswagen Polo
Hyundai i20
Skoda Fabia
Volkswagen Polo
Seat Ibiza
Toyota Yaris
Hyundai Getz
Mazda 2
Mercedes-Benz A Class
Mitsubishi Colt

Small Family Cars
Volkswagen Golf
Seat Leon
Toyota Carolla
Toyota Auris
Mazda 3

Not all of these are in your bracket (more like up to 6k) but you will be able to find some. Hit me up tomorrow when I'm more awake!

We have a C1 and a Pug 107 (same car as an Aygo) and Insurance is the cheapest available (£450 for my 19 yr old daughters own policy!) £20 tax 50+ MPG and I paid £5.5k NEW last year for the Pug in an end of month cash deal (ring round the dealers). With the lowest possible depreciation dialled if you can buy them at this sort of money you will only lose about £1k in three years, now THAT is cheap motoring!

Oh did I mention they are quite perky to drive but don't touch a pre-2009 of any of the three makes (Aygo, C1 or 107) as they had a clutch problem meaning most will go before 30k miles, fixed on the facelift. Otherwise all good

Good to know about the clutch!

I looked at the small city cars but aygo/c1/107 are all fetching more than 3K

Another option is the Hyundai Getz 2008 40K miles it retails for around 3K.

I hate Hyundais but its not for me.

I studied the market pretty well and I think at the moment the best value for money is the Nissan Pixo.

Anyone knows anything about them?

Budget is crucial, Pixos are selling for more than 4K and she would like to stick to 3K as its a car to be only used for the supermarket etc...she works close to where she lives.

They have a nice car for longer trips and holidays.

My mum has owned a Hyundai Getz for the best part of 5 years. 2004 1.1 CDX 5 Door. Its been very reliable only one fault in that time was the wing mirror fell off from cold a few winters ago. We replaced it with a used part cheaply enough. Running costs are extremely low and its spacious enough (we've had a few tables, ovens, etc in it) The boot isnt massive but big enough for the weekly shop. The 1.1 is a perky revvy engine and is fine for a single person going from here to there. However its almost useless with 3+ people in the car as the 62.5 bhp /ton cant really handle too much weight. My mum uses it to travel 1 mile to work and back daily and for shopping on the weekends. My dad uses it every weekend to travel to north london and back. I cant praise it more to be honest but I would say that we have done low mileage (its not hit 30k yet).

Personally the Pixo is a newer smaller (city car rather than supermini) Renault based vehicle. From a practical standpoint it doesnt appear to be as good on paper but I've never driven one..

I have been these last 2 days looking at the Getz and my god how expensive even at auctions.

A 2008 70K miles went for 2400 and a 2009 11K mile went for 3800!!!

How much were these new then!

Its silly.

From Wisebuyers for my mums car:

Hyundai Getz (2002-09)
5Dr Hatchback 1.1 CDX (2004/54)
Average Mileage: 90,000
Price New: £8,069

Car valuation adjusted for 27,000 miles
Retail: £2,598

Private Good: £1,868
Private Average: £1,458
Private Poor: £1,108
Part Exchange: £1,608
Trade: £1,484

So about £8k new which sounds about right as we paid £4.5k for ours after 3 years and it was low mileage then also..

Does she want to sell it?

Haha no sorry I'm trying to pry it out of her myself! Besides its much older than your original request specifications .. 2004

However as I mentioned above I highly recommend it. Another small car I would recommend is the Mitsubishi Colt, I owned a 2005 1.1 Mirage for 9 months and it didnt miss a beat! I wish I hadnt sold it as it kept its value well, was very nippy for a 3 cylinder (78bhp/ton) and had good looks and unique factor to boot.

This ticks all your boxes :

Yes that car he is going to see this weekend.

I am realizing there is a huge void in this range.

Quite a business opportunity I think to sell to this band or stratum of buyers.

In a few years the VW Up / Skoda Citigo / Seat Mii will be in the void I think (as well as the Aygo / C1/107)..

I'm looking at a hybrid as a real alternative to this market. Low end Civic IMA's or 04 aged Prius' again the price is slightly higher, the running costs are the same as is the performance and you get better practicality..

Lease. You can have your choice of brand new little city boxes to potter around in for several years for less than £100 per month. You can get fully maintained deals and all will have a full warranty so why bother with used? After2/3 years, hand it back and jump straight into a new box with a different badge/paint colour.

Bluestreak. I'd steer well clear of an battery laden Hybrid that is getting a bit long in the tooth. My mate works for Honda and he says the battery packs in their hybrids are expected to last roughly 8 years and will cost in the region of £7k to replace.

Good to know! The Prius seems to have good feedback on the battery side. I may look into lease on an Up / Citigo / Mii (I think the Mii looks the best of the 3).

Leaasing for less than £100 per month would be great.

Where are these deals?
