Change locks on upvc doors

If you're ordering new locks, think about ordering ones that are keyed-alike, that way the same key will work in all the locks.

This, though the downside is when you lose a set of keys on a drunken night out you have to replace all the locks :x

I replaced all our locks with expensive anti-pick, anti-bump, anti-drill, anti-this, anti-that locks that I paid to have keyed alike and, about six months later, managed to lose one of the keys. Luckily I'd kept all the old locks so swapped them back and sent all the expensive ones off to be rekeyed - cost about 20% of the original cost of the locks (+P&P).

Sod's law was obviously in effect because very shortly after I'd refitted the rekeyed locks, I found the missing key in one of my jackets

Is that the key you gave to Cindy?

Nope, but if it'd been at the bottom of one of her (many, many) handbags :handbag: it would never again have seen the light of day...

You know the usual, fall out of taxi, stagger to front door, play hunt the key, eventually realise that you might have left them in the Taxi, so they now where you live!!! Swear for five minutes, wake up neighbour for spare key, barricade your doors as best you can and then lay awake all night waiting for someone to break in to your house……

Just rang a local locksmith and he said rough cost would be £40 each. Not sure if that included vat so I’ll assume about £100.

Obviously more than buying them myself, but it’s about £60 diesel round trip (probably cost more in the Z4) and £10-£15 each to buy, so cost is probably comparable either way.

The question is do I want the hassle of driving there, 4-5hr round trip or not, benefit of going is being able to check the place over, although the estate agent will do that for me.

Where is the bungalow? Surely someone in here will be close and do it for you, they are a doddle.
Along with the overall lock length you need to get the correct 'split' measurement as the bar that turns to set the locks isn't always bang in the middle. If you've looked at screwfix you've probably noticed that some you can get three 80mm locks but either in 40/40, 45/35 or 30/50

Thanks. Yes, I was told about the different measurements and what they refer to (would’ve been stumped otherwise).

Possibly someone here could help but if I did go then I could tie it in with a visit to my dad in his care home, so that’s another reason to go myself.

Absolutely a reason to make a day of it!

Is it practical to remove one barrel and take it to the likes of scewfix and make sure you get the right one?

How far is the nearest place you can buy locks?

Unfortunately there are no other locks on these two doors, so that would mean leaving the house “unlocked”.

I think I’ll whip them out and measure and hopefully the measurements will match what’s listed on the website.

Haven’t looked yet where the nearest screwfix type place is, but must be something reasonably close.

Another option is to buy a couple in each size then return the ones I don’t need.

Do you have any UVPC doors in your house?
Could you secure your home and take the locks over to the other place, they may fit and you can treat yourself to new locks at home.
The removal and refitting is a doddle.

Same problem with my house, no other locks on the doors, and would leave my place unlocked for a whole day, if I do it at the bungalow it might only be 30 minutes perhaps, depending where the store is.

Think I’ve decided to go myself and will try measuring them and hope that’s conclusive, otherwise by a job lot to try. I’ll check stock before I go and if stocks are low I’ll probably just buy them before I go and return the unused ones.

Thanks everyone for the help.

Then dropping the lock barrels out, measuring and a trip to Screwfix/Toolsation etc is the only way.
Take the barrel out and trace around the profile and mark the location of the fixing hole and locking tab and take that with you.

That’s a good idea.

Just checked and there is a screwfix and toolstation on the same trading estate about 3 miles from the bungalow!

as they're only temporary before the house is sold, if they don't have the exact size you need then go longer, not shorter. as mentioned, not a problem if they stick out a bit.

our house was a bank repossession from some unsavoury characters... the bank changed all the locks, and they stuck out about 2cm either side of the door. Though they were of limited use as the handle was broken... anywhos, first thing we did when we got the keys was some correctly sized locks and a new handle, and all is good now.

and as with all moving mechanisms, a little squirt of wd40 into the locks will ensure everything keeps moving nice and smoothly.

WD40 isn’t a lubricant tho.
Get a can of light spray lubricant when you buy the new lock barrels
